Nicky Hayden dies

The Bufalini hospital in Cesena, where the former GP champion was being treated following Wednesday's accident, announced the sad news.

Nicky Hayden has been unable to overcome the injuries he sustained after being knocked down last Wednesday in Rimini and died this evening at the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, Italy, a hospital spokesman confirmed: "Doctors have certified the death of patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden who was admitted on Wednesday 17th May to the Cesena Bufalini Hospital's intensive care unit with serious, multiple injuries suffered on that day".

'Kentucky Kid' Hayden loses biggest battle

Hayden, MotoGP champion in 2006, took part in 218 Grands Prix with three victories and 28 podiums. He made his top flight debut in 2003 with Honda, and three years later won the MotoGP World Championships with Honda. Until his fatal accident, the 35-year-old American had been part of Honda's Pro Racing Superbike team, and placed fifth in the world ranking.
