Voters in Alabama, Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Virginia will head to the polls on Tuesday 21 June to participate in their state’s 2022 Primary Election. The votes cast will decide the candidates who will face off in the 2022 midterm election in November.

All states will select the candidates for Congress they want to see on the ballot later this year.

Alabama

Democrats will have the chance to vote for their choice of governor in the state, as the current Republican governor, Kay Ivey, is up for reelection. The gubernatorial vote will take place at the same time as the midterm elections on November 8.

Republicans have more choice voting choices as more positions are up for grabs. However, in the context of this article the important names on the ballot paper for the Senate will be Katie Britt and Mo Brooks. One of these two will be the Republican candidate for the Senate come the midterms. Donald Trump originally backed Brooks, but recently switched his endorsement to Britt.

Alabama’s fifth congressional district is also up for grabs for Republicans. The two candidates are Dale Strong and Casey Wardynski.

Arkansas

Elections in Arkansas are relegated to the state legislature, which will be decided on November 8.

District of Columbia

Two elections related to the midterms will be taking place in DC. As the area does not have voting seats in Congress, the winners of the elections will be either non-voting delegates or shadow representatives.

The Democrat primary for shadow representative is a face off between incumbent Oye Owolewa and Linda Gray.

For the Non-Voting Delegate spot, Democrats can choose between long-time incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has had the seat since 1991 and two challengers, Wendy Hamilton and Kelly Mikel Williams. Republicans have just one name, Nelson Rimensnyder, on their primary ballot.

Georgia

Democrats will choose between Joyce Griggs and Wade Herring in their first district House primary on Tuesday. Neither candidate received more than half the vote in their recent primary, though Griggs received 48.8 percent of the vote, making her the likely winner.

Republicans need not vote as their candidate, Buddy Carter, ran unopposed in his primary. He is currently in his fourth term in the House.

The tenth congressional district is also having Republican primaries, with Trump-endorsed Vernon Jones threatened by outside candidate Mike Collins. Collins is the bookies favourite to win the primary.

Virginia

Virginia’s 6th House District will go the polls on June 21 for Republicans. Ben Cline and Merritt Hale are running for the nomination.

In Virginia’s second congressional district incumbent Jen Kiggans is expected to triumph. There is also a GOP primary in the seventh district in which incumbent Bryce Reeves is the favourite.
