Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, two of world golf’s biggest stars, have hit the headlines in recent week both on and off the course. But while the Northern Irishman will be skipping the upcoming 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, world number one Scheffler will be looking to let his golf do the talking once again.

In addition to winning on his two starts prior to last week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, McIlroy has filed for divorce from wife Erica Stoll and has immediately been romantically linked to CBS golf reporter Amanda Balionis.

Why was Scheffler arrested during the 2024 PGA Championship? What was he charged with?

All of which has taken some of the limelight away from Scheffler, who has had his own trouble to contend with.

The 27-year-old has won four times on the PGA Tour this season and became a father for the first time at the start of this month. However, he was arrested before the start of the second round of last week’s major and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

In a police report, Detective Bryan Gillis alleged that Scheffler, driving an SUV, had accelerated rather than stopped when he had attempted to give him instructions, resulting in Gillis being dragged, which caused wrist and knee injuries. Traffic had been halted because of an unrelated fatal crash nearby in which a man had been killed.

The golfer described the situation as a “big misunderstanding” and it has now been revealed Louisville’s police department will investigate Gillis’ actions. It was later discovered the detective had failed to activate his bodycam video recorder before the incident, which is standard procedure.

Scheffler was detained, mug shots and all, but was released two hours before his round two tee-time. Despite the disruption to his preparation, he shot a five-under par 66 but dropped back on Saturday before finishing in a tie for eighth.

When is Scheffler’s arraignment? What will he plead?

The two-time major champion’s arraignment had been set in Louisville for Tuesday (20 May) but has been pushed back to 3 June because of a conflict in his attorney Steve Romines’ schedule. Romines has told ESPN that Scheffler will plead not guilty and won’t be attending, which leaves him free to concentrate on his golf.

While McIlory and newly crowned PGA champion Xander Schauffele are among the big names missing this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, Scheffler, as well as the likes of Jordan Spieth and Max Homa, will be taking part at Colonial Country Club in Forth Worth, Texas.

Rather than resting, they will be hoping to fine-tune their games ahead one of of the busiest periods of the season. Signature events the Memorial Tournament (starts 9 June) and the Travellers Championship (23 June) will take place either side of the 2024 US Open (16 June), three of the biggest and most lucrative events on tour.
