ATLÉTICO 0 - 0 VILLARREAL
No way through for Atlético against the yellow wall
Little football and few goal scoring chances at the Vicente Calderon this evening. Griezmann picks up a yellow and will miss the derby.
To be frank a 0-0 scoreline should have surprised no-one. Two of the meanest defeces in LaLiga and an Atleti team who have only scored 15 goals in front of their own supporters this season. both teams came out at the Calderon knowing that Real Madrid had slipped up earlier in Malaga but after the 90 ,minutes of stalemate the biggest winner from the game at Manzanares were FC Barcelona.
Chances were far harder to come by at the Vicente Calderon as the two best defences in the league stood firm.
Atletico's top scorer Antoine Griezmann headed Juanfran's inch-perfect cross just wide before Angel Correa's audacious chipped effort forced Villarreal goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into his only serious save after half-time.
And Villarreal could have snatched all three points on the break when Cedric Bakambu blazed over with just Jan Oblak to beat.
A point consolidates Villarreal's position in fourth, five points adrift of Real Madrid.
"Villarreal defended their area and counter-attacked very well," said Atletico boss Diego Simeone.
"We maintain our lead over them which for us is very positive."
The bad news for the "Colchoneros" is the yellow card picked up by French striker Antoine Griezmann. His fiifth card means that the striker will miss next weekend's Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu for Atleti.
