Webber: "Alonso has more talent in his little finger than his rivals"

Mark Webber talks to ESPN about the McLaren driver: "Would Fernando love to parachute himself into a Mercedes? Of course he would".

2013 was Mark Webber’s final F1 season. Since then he has taken on the new challenge of the World Endurance Championship, a competition he has adapted to very quickly and was crowned the champion of in 2015 with Porsche. Since bowing out of the circuit the Australian has remained close friends with Fernando Alonso and always has kind words to say about the Spaniard: “Fernando just wants to be at the front maximising his potential. Last year, when he was fighting it out with some of the younger drivers, he demonstrated that he has more talent in his little finger.

"If you are knocking around with those guys, week in week out, it wears you down. That is a question for him and his drive and tenacity and determination. It is about that middle step on the podium for him. Would he love to parachute himself into a Mercedes? Of course he would”, Webber told ESPN.

The 39-year-old, who will be commentating on Channel 4 this season, is well aware how hard last year was for the two McLaren drives, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, and he thinks the Woking team need to make big improvements if they’re to hold onto their star men behind the wheel. “There is nothing worse than having non-finishes. It is horrible for a driver to go through that effort, and you don't even see the chequered flag”.
