Real Madrid have added their name to the raft of tributes that have poured in for footballing great Johan Cruyff, who on Thursday passed away at the age of 68 after losing his battle with cancer.

In a statement published on the club's official website following the announcement of Cruyff's death, club president Florentino Pérez spoke of his "deep sorrow" at the news, describing the Dutchman as "an extraordinary player who defined an era".

Real's statement in full:

A footballing legend, an icon of the sport, has passed away. I would like to express my deep sorrow following the death of Johan Cruyff and offer, on behalf of Real Madrid, and all Real Madrid supporters, our condolences and sympathy to F.C Barcelona and above all to his wife and children. He was an extraordinary player who defined an era, and therefore today is a very sad day for the footballing world.
