It a statement released this morning, Real Oviedo confirmed that Fernando Hierro has officially taken over the coaching position at the club. It will be the former Real Madrid player's first experience on the bench - he spent a season with his old club as Carlo Ancelotti's number two but this is his first managerial role per se. Hierro will sign for one season with the option of a second.
Arturo Elías, Carlos Slim's son-in-law and representative for the Carso Group (the company which hold a controlling stake in Oviedo) explained: "After speaking with Fernando, he totally convinced me of what he can add to the project which the Carso Group is committed to in the medium and long term with Real Oviedo. Fernando Hierro will be fully involved, from the most basic tasks to the most demanding in managing and leading the first team squad. My own commitments to Real Oviedo remain unchanged. As I said two years ago, when the team was still in the Segunda División B, the aim is to return the team back to the First Division in a time frame of three to five years. We are in the first year and I am sure that Fernando will help us to achieve those aspirations”.
Hierro's first declarations published through the club were: "The project which Real Oviedo have offered me is one which I find very exciting and stimulating, for everything which this club represents in national football, for a tradition and fanbase which is in keeping with the top division; and also for the stability which Arturo Elías and the Carso Group have implemented at the club with support and determination”.
