Mourinho has won the battle to keep David de Gea at Manchester United. According to sources close to AS, the Spanish international wants to remain at the English club and - at least for the moment - will not be making the move to Real Madrid. David is very keen to immerse himself in the new project under the leadership of the Portuguese manager who has been in touch with the goalkeeper while on international duty in France.
After last summer's fiasco in the attempted signing of the Spanish number one by Real Madrid, many will be delighted that this situation has been resolved early this year rather than it hanging over both clubs. Keylor Navas has certainly demonstrated his qualities to Los Blancos in their Champions League winning season and fans at the Bernabeu will not be too disappointed in this news. The Old Trafford faithful, on the other hand, are likely to be absolutely delighted that their three-time player of the season has decided to stay even without the prospect of games in Europe's premier club competition.
Real Madrid did have an ace up their sleeves when it came to the signing of the highly regarded player no matter what United wanted. An option to purchase De Gea had been agreed although they would have had to stump up 50 million euros to make it a reality. The Spaniard had inserted this clause into his new contract with United that he signed last year after the failed move but this also meant extending his time left in England to 2019. The date set for the expiration of the Madrid-only buy option was 15 June, so as today comes to a close, so that option is put to bed.
The change in manager of the Red Devils seems to have been a game changer amid reports that the goalkeeper did not have the best of relationships with previous coach Van Gaal. And with Madrid expected to have their transfer ban upheld after appeal following this summer, it may mean that the David rumours can settle down for a while.
