England 2 - 1 WaIes: Three Lions down Dragons in Group B
Daniel Sturridge struck in stoppage time to hand England their first win of the tournament. Bale scored a belter for Wales and Vardy equalized.
England kick-started their campaign at Euro 2016 with a last-gasp win over a resolute Wales side in Lens, sending Roy Hodgson's side to the top of Group B ahead of the final round of matches.
Wales, fresh from a stunning win over Slovakia, took the lead through Gareth Bale, whose powerful free-kick from distance caught Joe Hart out. England, fresh from conceding a last-minute goal against Russia in their opening group match, shuffled the deck at half time, bringing on Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge in place of the ineffectual Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, whose heroics for Tottenham throughout the season have finally caught up.
The effect was instant. Vardy smashed a loose ball past Wayne Hennessey to level the match before Sturridge found a way through in stoppage time to prod past the Wales keeper. Bale had a late chance to equalize but sent his header wide from a good position.
Wales play last-placed Russia in their final game while England face Slovakia.
As it happened
Min 90+3 | Bale! The Wales forward rises above a half-hearted challenge in the area and heads just wide. And that's it! Sturridge saves England's Euro 2016! England 2 - 1 Wales.
Min 90+1 | Gooooooooooooal! Daniel Sturridge! The England striker wriggles through a sea of Wales defenders and pokes past Hennessey. 2-1 to England! Hodgson going mental on the touchline. Heartbreak for Wales.
Min 90 | Three minutes added...
Min 89 | England corner, same again from Rooney and this time Cahill reads it and gets a good connection but his header is high.
Min 88 | Rashford manages to break into the box but he overruns it a tad and is caught by an excellent Williams tackle.
Min 86 | Wales again struggle to clear but eventually take the most obvious route out of trouble and hammer it as far as possible from Hennessey's sticks.
Min 83 | "How was that a foul?" asks Vardy after a goalmouth melee. Wales bang the resulting free kick long and England bring it straight back. The script for the final minutes has been written, barring any improv.
Min 82 | England probing for a way through, Wales soaking it up as the clock winds down. A point here will do them very nicely indeed. Another Rooney corner, similar height, pace and target area, but cleared again.
Min 79 | Williams, J. has been a bit of a live-wire since coming on and he goes on a run, unchallenged, and squeezes a shot off but it's too high to bother Hart.
Min 77 | England patiently build an attack and Rooney eventually shoots but it's blocked by the Wales back line.
Min 75 | 15 minutes to go in Lens. Roy Hodgson examining the tips of his shoes in the dugout. He's played all his cards now.
Min 71 | And it's Lallana who makes way. Kitchen sink time for England.
Min 70 | Ooooh, here we go. Marcus Rashford is coming on! Robson-Kanu goes off for Wales, Jonathan Williams on in his place.
Min 68 | Almost 70 mins on the clock, England with 70 percent possession so far, Wales have still only had the one shot on goal. Suggestion for England: don't give away any free kicks in your half.
Min 64 | Ledley trots off, looks like he's ok to carry on. Ramsey sends in the corner but it goes out for a throw on the other side of the pitch. Ledley is going off, depriving the game of its finest beard and Wales of one of their best players. David Edwards, of Wolves. coming on.
Min 63 | Wales relieve a bit of pressure by getting the ball up the other end. A corner is swung in and Vardy is underneath it to clear. Ledley is down in a spot of bad news for Wales.
Min 60 | Davies then goes in the book for a challenge on the Liverpool man. Rooney hits the free-kick from deep and there's panic in the Wales area as a flurry of boots swing at the loose ball but eventually, it's hacked clear. Heart in mouth moment there for the Wales support. Coleman's back line suddenly in disarray.
Min 59 | Lallana has a shot that ricochets off Davies' arm for a corner. No handball there, it was glued to his side. Rooney hits the same patch of grass again but again there's no white shirt to get on the end of it.
Min 57 | Ashley Williams it was, who unwittingly provided the assist. Vardy makes an immediate impression off the bench. Hodgson to be applauded for shaking the side up after his reluctance to do so against Russia.
Min 55 | Vardy gets the England part started! The Leicester striker batters it into the net from two yards after a bit of a melee in the area. He was a yard offside, but a defender got the final touch. 1-1 now.
Min 54 | Rooney has a go but it's saved smoothly by Hennessey. The resulting corner is hammered clear.
Min 53 | Singing in the stands, we can't quite make out if it's "It's coming home", copyright Baddiel and Skinner with the Lightning Seeds, or "You're going home" copyright the Wales fans.
Min 51 | Vardy's first touch comes from Ashley Williams, who slams the England forward Street Fighter circa 1995 style.
Min 48 | Walker breaks down the right and wins a corner. Rooney again finds a white shirt with his delivery but the header is glanced well wide of danger. What price for England all those Kane corners against Russia now...
Min 47 | Bale careers down the right and is brought down but his protests are waved away.
Min 47 | Kane and Sterling off, unsurprisingly.
Min 46 | Sturridge and Vardy are on for England, who have a small mountain to climb here. About Snowdon sized, you could say.
Half time | And Wales take their 1-0 lead into the break. What Churchillian stylings will Hodgson deliver in the dressing room. Coleman's chat should be more straightforward: more of the same, boys.
Min 45 | The Wales fans, as you'd expect, loving every second of this. A 58-year wait for a major tournament and the ways things stand, they're in the last 16.
Min 44 | Roy Hodgson has to ring the changes at half time, but will he have the Stones? He won't enjoy life through the Lens if he can't turn this around.
Min 43 | Big trouble for England now. One point, one goal...
Min 41 | Gooooooooooooal! Gareth Bale! My word! It was a long way out but Bale thought he'd have a go anyway, and what a strike! Hart dives low to his left to try and stop it but he can only palm it into the net. He's lucky to still have his hand. What a goal. 1-0 to Wales. Incredible scenes.
Min 39 | England's travelling band strike up the theme from Rocky. Our prediction for the fight? Boredom.
Min 36 | Daniel Sturridge warming up now. Hardly surprising. Kane looks knackered, as a man who has played every Spurs game for the last two years or so ought to. He's as likely to move into space at the moment as a local on the Madrid Metro.
Min 34 | England win another corner, Rooney sends it past the penalty spot again and Smalling gets his head on it, just wide! Hennessey was unsighted there as well. Great chance.
Min 31 | Penalty appeal! England claim Davies handles a high cross in the area under pressure, but it looked fairly innocuous from here.
Min 30 | Rooney tries to pick out Smalling with a well-placed free-kick but Wales clear.
Min 28 | It's all pretty scrappy, like a mid-table Premier League match. England have had the better of it, just about, carving out that one decent chance, but Wales are snapping at heels and unsettling the opposition back four when they get the chance.
Min 26 | Walker gets his head down and drives to the byline, Davies clears for a corner. Rooney takes and Alli is penalised for a foul in the area.
Min 24 | England win another free kick, Rose going down under a challenge from Ledley. Rooney eyeing this one... The skipper sends in a cross and Cahill connects, but it's straight at Hennessey.
Min 23 | Lallana tries a little flick, but Wales clear. First touch of class from the Liverpool man.
Min 22 | Kane... and he's not able. The Spurs striker blasts over the bar. Terrible effort.
Min 21 | Alli is clipped just outside the box. Decent position for a free-kick here...
Min 19 | There seems to be little urgency from England here, which is odd given their situation in the group. No pressure at all on the Wales back four, who will be happy enough to knock it about between themselves all afternoon.
Min 17 | England win a corner. Rooney sends in a dangerous ball, but there's nobody to get a boot on it and Wales clear. Good deliveries from the England skipper so far.
Min 15 | Joe Allen, the Welsh Xavi, nicks the ball in midfield but can't pick a pass to release Wales on the break. Dier mops up.
Min 13 | The general consensus is that England need an early goal to profit in this match. Little sign of one yet, other than Sterling's skewed effort. Wales happy to cede possession to Roy Hodgson's men at the moment.
Min 12 | Rooney loses patience with an attack being built in midfield and blasts an effort into the stands from 30 yards out. Wayne Hennessey not troubled by that.
Min 9 | Robson-Kanu gets the better of Smalling on the left and finds Bale, who canters into the area and pings a left-footer towards goal. First taste of the ball for the Real Madrid man.
Min 8 | Wales come forward down the right, Ramsey conducting the attack, but can't find a clean pass into the England area.
Min 6 | Sterling gets on the end of a cross in the area but pokes his shot wide. Decent chance for England goes begging.
Min 5 | Alli plays a ball over the top of the Wales defence, straight out into touch. Huge cheers from the red section of the crowd.
Min 4 | Dele Alli and Ramsey get involved in some early handbags. The Wales midfielder is then floored, earning a free-kick. Ramsey sends it in, but the England defence deal with it.
Min 2 | England stroke it around the back four for a bit before getting bored and lumping it forward to nobody in particular. A corner is earned in the next move and, to the relief of a nation, Harry Kane doesn't take it. Rooney pumps it in but it's cleared with ease.
We're underway! England in white, Wales not in red, for some reason...
And here comes God Save the Queen. Joe Hart giving it the full treatment.
The Wales side belt out Land of my Fathers. The crowd in full throat.
Here come the teams... it's anthem time in Lens.

Preview of England vs Wales: Euro 2016
Chris Coleman's side go into this afternoon's game as table toppers after their win over Slovakia in the opening game on Saturday. A win would secure a place in the last 16 for the Welsh and Roy Hodgson will be anxious to see his team make amends for the last minute lapsus that cost his side two points in Marseilles against Russia.
England start as favorites coming into this afternoon's match in Lens and will be buoyed on by the provocative press conference after Real Madrid's Gareth Bale claimed that no England player would find a place in the Welsh team. England boss Roy Hodgson later claimed that Bale's comments were lacking in respect.
England will hope to bounce back after Saturday's disappointment and will be inspired by captain Wayne Rooney who asks that his team play with the mentality that hey came into the tournament with.
Wales showed against Slovakia on Saturday that they are at Euro 2016 to do more than just make up the numbers. The 'Red Dragons' are driven on by Real Madrid star Gareth Bale who opened the scoring against the Slovakian side with a trademark direct free kick. Bale has also been responsable for stoking the flames prior to today's game in Lens after his polemic declaratorios which have not been well received in the England camp.
A win for Chirs Coleman's team would confirm a place in the round of 16 for the Welsh side who will look to Bale and support of Hal Robson-Kanu and Aaron Ramsey to cause danger for the English rear-guard.
