Hungary 3-3 Portugal live online: Euro 2016 Group F report
JOE KLAMARAFP

Hungary continued their magnificent Euro 2016 campaign as they secured top spot in Group F following an enthralling 3-3 draw in the section's final round of matches on Wednesday evening.

A strike from Zoltan Gera and two for Balazs Dzsudzsak had Bernd Storck's team in front on three occasions, but each time they were pegged back by goals from Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo, who hit a brace.

The stalemate saw Ronaldo become the first player to score at four separate European Championships.

Hungary are joined by the Portuguese in the last 16 - and by fellow surprise package Iceland, who clinched second place after defeating Austria 2-1 thanks to Arnor Ingvi Traustason's stoppage-time winner.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had given Iceland the lead, before Aleksandar Dragovic's missed penalty for Austria was followed by an Alessandro Schopf equaliser on the hour mark.

Hungary and Portugal's six-goal thriller in Lyon had briefly appeared enough for Fernando Santos' side to take second and set up a last-16 meeting with England.

However, it is the Icelanders - competing at their first ever major finals - who will play the Three Lions after their Stade de France late-show pushed Portugal down to third.

Portugal now go through as one of the four best third-placed finishers, and face Group D winners Croatia in the first round of the knockout stages.

Hungary, having negotiated the group phase of a tournament for the first time since the 1966 World Cup, will be up against Group E runners-up Belgium.

Austria, much fancied before France 2016 began, are condemned to an early exit having collected just one point.

Here's how the action unfolded:

Peeep! It's all over! It ends 3-3 in Lyon and... hold your horses! Iceland have scored in added time at the Stade de France! Unbelievable! And the final whistles goes in the capital! So Portugal finish third and Iceland reclaim second, with Hungary sitting pretty as ever on top of the pile. Hungary go on to face the runners-up in Group E - current most likely to be Belgium - Iceland take on England, and Portugal are into the last 16 as a third-placed qualifier and meet Croatia.

Min 92 | Hungary are clearly settling for their point, so unless Portugal can do something, then no.

Min 90 | Three minutes of time added on. Will we see a late twist in this enthralling tale?

Min 89 | Ronaldo wins a free-kick in almost exactly the position where Gareth Bale beat Joe Hart from, but his kick is high, wide and handsome.

Min 86 | The excitement has slightly died down in Lyon - good job too, because my keyboard is taking a punishing - but not enough to prevent Cristiano from having his 789th shot on goal of the tournament and sclaffing it wide from range.

Min 82 | Nani is substituted for Danilo Pereira, while Hungary also make a third and final change, Lovrencsics trotting off and Zoltan Stieber coming on in his stead.

Min 79 | Portugal are looking the more likely winners at the mo - but that doesn't mean Hungary won't suddenly skip up the other end and hammer in a fourth. It's been that kind of evening. Renato almost has Ronaldo running through on Mr Baggy Trousers in the Hungarian goal, but the flag is up.

Min 76 | Ronaldo is on a hat-trick, and a chance falls to him to grab it. Vieirinha scampers forward and sees his ball deflected into the path of the mike-throwing-one, but he fires his volley down and it bounces off target. Quaresma then breaks forward and launches an effort on goal, but whips it wide.

Min 73 | Nani looks up, gets it out of his feet and crosses for Cristiano, but his header skims past the far post.

Min 70 | Hungary make another change as Szalai makes way for Krisztian Nemeth.

Min 69 | Portugal come forward dangerously as the ball is fed to Ronaldo running into the box on the right, but a red shirt is there to nick it away from him.

Min 67 | So... The equalisers for Austria and Portugal mean it's all change in Group F. Hungary remain top with 5 points, the Portuguese are up to second on 3 points, overtaking Iceland, who are also on 3. Austria stay bottom on 2. Iceland had been set for a last-16 clash with England, but that honour now falls to Portugal. Hungary remain likely to face Belgium, and Iceland would take on Croatia.

Min 64 | Hungary hit the post! "What is going on?" yells the commentator. The cross comes in low from the left, and Szalai opens up his right foot to slap it off the upright.

Min 62 | Goooal! Portugal peg Hungary back again! Quaresma has been on the field for a matter of moments, and he it is who crosses from the left to find Ronaldo's bonce - and the 31-year-old heads past Kiraly! 3-3! What a game!

Min 61 | Austria equalise in Paris, Schöpf slicing through the Iceland backline and finishing low into the far corner. Back in Lyon, Ricardo Quaresma is on for Gomes.

Min 57 | Ronaldo and Mario get in each other's way after Renato feeds the ball towards the pair in shooting space in the area, Mario finally dragging it wide. CR7 then does the same from distance. Portugal are on their way out as it stands.

Min 56 | I've just seen a replay of Cristiano's reaction to that goal. He wasnae happy.

Min 55 | Incredible stuff! Hungary are back in front! Dzsudzsak stands over a free-kick right of centre, but it's straight at the wall. However, he picks the ball back up, gets it out of his feet and fires back towards goal, his shot taking a touch of Nani's boot, bouncing off the turf and flying past Patricio's despairing dive and into the corner! Unbelievable Jeff!

Min 54 | Cristiano becomes the first player to score at four European Championship finals, of course.

Min 52 | Ufff! Could have been 3-2 to Portugal there. As Ron Atkinson would say, Mario has come out for this second 45 with fire in his belly. Having just provided the cross for the leveller, he centres dangerously from the right once more and Nani, sliding in a little a la Gazza at Euro 96, can't quite reach it.

Min 50 | Equaliser for Portugal! What a start to the second half! Joao Mario comes forward on the right and crosses for Cristiano... and this time he makes no mistake with a lovely finish, flicking the ball in with a sumptuous backheel. 2-2. As you were at half time, Portugal still going through.

Min 49 | Hungary almost get an immediate third! Szalai releases Lovrencsics bursting forward on the left, but his low shot is into the side-netting.

Min 47 | Gooooooal! Dzsudzsák's kick takes a touch off the wall in fizzes in past Patricio! Well I never. 2-1 to Hungary

Peeep! The second half begins and Hungary immediately win a free-kick in shooting range for Dzsudzsak, right of centre...

The teams are back out, and have made one change each. Bayern Munich new boy Renato Sanches is on for Portugal in place of Moutinho, while Hungary goalscorer Gera has been replaced by Barnabas Bese.

Peep! That's half time. Nani's equaliser late in the half changes nothing in terms of the Group F standings, but changes everything in terms of Portugal's Euro 2016 future. With Iceland leading Austria 1-0, Hungary remain top on goal difference ahead of the Icelanders while the Portuguese stay third but would be through as one of the four best third-placed finishers. As things stand, Austria are heading home.

Min 45 | The sides trade shots from outside of the box as first Szalai tries to beat Patricio from way out with a bouncing ball, before Gomes advances menacingly towards the Hungary area - but fires straight into Kiraly's grateful arms.

Min 43 | Gooooal to Portugal! What was I saying about a lack of cutting edge? Ronaldo may be having major difficulties hitting a cow's arse with a banjo in this tournament, but he steps up with a lovely assist here. The Real ace finds Nani's run into the box with a perfectly-weighted through ball, and his one-time Manchester United colleague buries it low past Kiraly at the near post. 1-1.

Min 41 | Hungary come forward dangerously down the right as Lovrencsics crosses low and forces Pepe to knock it behind.

Min 40 | Portugal have the ball in the back of the net, but the flag is up. Nani crosses to the back post where Pepe stretches to knock it back across goal for it to be thundered into an empty net, but the Real Madrid defender was offside.

Min 38 | Corner for Portugal, which is punched away by Kiraly, quickly followed up by another delivery which is not roubling the Hungarian defence. To say Portugal are showing an England-esque lack of attacking cutting edge would be being kind.

Min 35 | Gera is booked for bringing down Gomes, and Ronaldo lines up another free-kick on the right. His effort is....pants. Juhasz was also shown a yellow card for a foul a few moments ago. Over in the French capital, Austria's Aleksandar Dragovic has missed a penalty. Oh dear.

Min 32 | Olés from the Hungary crowd.

Min 30 | Half an hour gone, and Hungary and Iceland are in the driving seat in Group F. Portugal's performance has been somewhat less mint than their strips, and the much-fancied Austria are on the next plane home with their tails firmly between their legs.

Min 29 | Kiraly is made to work this time, at least. Ronaldo lines up another free-kick, firing it low towards the corner, where the keeper is taking no chances and pads it out for a corner. From the resulting kick, Fernando Santos' men are claiming a Hungary handball as the ball bounces around the box... but Martin Atkinson is unmoved.

Min 25 | So, as things stand: Hungary are topping the group with 7 points, Iceland are taking second with 5, and Portugal and Austria are both heading out with 2 and 1 respectively.

Min 23 | Portugal pick up a free-kick in Ronaldo territory. The Real Madrid man, making a record 17th European Championship finals appearance today, adopts The Pose... And his effort comes to precisely zilch. Up the other end, Akos Elek almost doubles Hungary's advantage! The loose ball falls to him on the left side of the box and his angled drive is beaten out by Rui Patricio!

Min 20 | Goooal to Hungary! The Magyars come back at Portugal and Lovrencsics scuttles down the right before crossing towards Szalai, where it's put out for a corner, which is headed away at the near post. The clearance lands at the feet of Zoltan Gera, waiting outside the box - and he chests it down and pings it into the corner! And Iceland have also taken the lead in Paris! Bodvarsson has put them ahead at the Stade de France.

Min 16 | Vieirinha crosses towards Ronaldo and Juhasz puts it out for a corner, which is followed by another that finally sees Ricardo Carvalho slap it tamely wide on the stretch.

Min 13 | The Hungarians are awarded a dangerous-looking free-kick in the left channel, but Dzsudzsak's delivery is rank. Guzmics then gets the first yellow card of the clash for chopping down Nani, and the Portuguese have a mirror-image free-kick at the other end. Moutinho crosses it, and Ronaldo is flagged for offside.

Min 11 | André Gomes sends in another corner for Portugal, which is cleared as far as Eliseu. The left-back then whips in an inviting ball that finds Nani's head, but it flies well over.

Min 7 | Hungary launch their firs attack of any real substance, Dzsudzsak crossing from the left and Pepe puts it for a corner with Szalai lurking. Nani then races down the left wing for Portugal and earns a corner, which Kiraly gobbles up.

Min 5 | Cristiano Ronaldo wins a Portugal free-kick on the left. Moutinho delivers, Hungary clear their lines only as far as Joao Mario, who can't quite get over his shot from the edge of the area, and it's well off target.

Min 3 | In other news, there's some sort of fire drill going on around me in the AS newsroom; it's only mildly distracting, Over in Paris, Iceland hit the woodwork.

Min 2 | Portugal begin on the attack and win a corner. Joao Moutinho delivers, but Hungary deal with it. Nani is then almost in on 40-years-young Gabor Kiraly but can't control on his chest and the chance is lost.

Peeep! We're underway! Half the pitch is covered in shadow, half isn't. Is there anything more annoying in football?

2 mins to kick-off | All these permutations are proving just a little too much for my delicate noggin, but (correct me if I'm wrong) the simple Group F rub seems to be: Hungary are through and will top the group with a win and possibly also with a draw; Iceland will make the last 16 with a draw or better; Portugal qualify with a draw and, depending on the result of Iceland-Austria, would finish first with a win; Austria are into the knockout stages with a victory, and nothing else will do them.

4 mins kick-off | I'm calling it a draw.

5 mins to kick-off | The teams take to the Parc OL pitch, Portugal wearing a minty-fresh green away kit. First question: who wins the anthem-off?

Teams: Hungary - Portugal

Portugal coach Santos goes with: Rui Patrício; Vieirinha, Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho, Eliseu; William, João Mário, Moutinho, André Gomes; Nani  and one microphone throwing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Hungary meanwhile will start with: Király; Lang, Juhász, Guzmics, Korhut; Elek, Pintér; Dzsudzsák, Gera, Lovrencsics and Szalai.

Preview Hungary - Portugal

Portugal have never fallen at a European Championship before the quarter-final stage but face the prosepct of a crushing early exit if they fail to beat Hungary in the final round of Group F matches on Wednesday.

Star turn Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty and a host of other chances as Portugal were held 0-0 by Austria to leave Fernando Santos's men third in Group F with just two points from two games, lebel with Iceland and two adrift of Bernd Storck's Magyars.

However, victory will guarantee Portugal top spot in the group and avoid a much tougher side of the draw containing hosts France, world champions Germany, holders Spain, Italy and England.

"Ronaldo is a player who scores a lot of goals and I'm sure he will score in the next game against Hungary," said Santos.

The former Porto, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon boss insists he does not care how Portugal win as long as they pick up three points. "We're sad but we have things in our own hands. It doesn't matter if we play better or ugly football."

Ronaldo has another chance to become the first player to score in four different European championships.

Forty-year-old goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly stands in his way, though, for a Hungary side assured of their place in the knockout stages after a 30-year wait to qualify for a major tournament.

Hungary shocked neighbours Austria 2-0 in their opening game before a late own goal handed them a 1-1 draw with Iceland.

"Who would have thought that we'd be top of the group with four points and that Portugal would need to win to qualify?" said Storck. "We have nothing to lose, Portugal have to win."
