James Rodriquez will be 25 on 12 June, the age when most footballers hit the peak of their talents and physical development. However, James took somewhat of a backwards step last season following the resounding success of his first year at the Bernabéu. AS understands that the Colombian disappointed coach Zidane over his lack of commitment towards the end of the campaign – a period when Real Madrid won their 12 remaining games in La Liga, as well as the Champions League. Don’t forget that in that famous final in Turin, James didn’t play a single minute. In the most crucial part of the game against Atlético Madrid, Zidane preferred to put his trust in Isco and Lucas Vazquez.
Statistics cut in half last season
James’ downfall at Madrid has undoubtedly come under Zidane. During the Colombian’s first season with Los Blancos (2014-15), he scored 17 goals and provided 18 assists, leaving fans with much admiration while nobody was left questioning the value of his €80 million transfer from Monaco either. But in the season just ended, his statistics were cut almost in half: 8 goals, 10 assists – less assists that is, than Cristiano and Bale (15 each), Kroos (13) and Isco (12).
Perez will try to convince Zidane
Zidane plans to meet with the playmaker when Real reassemble for preseason (James will arrive a bit later than others owing to his Copa America antics) and talk things out. If the Frenchman doesn’t see a radical turnaround in performances, James could well be heading for the exit. Manchester United and Mourinho would be rubbing their hands at such a prospect. The Portuguese likes James’ versatility and believes he could recover his form at Old Trafford. Although, as one of Florentino Perez’ big-name signings, the Real Madrid president will be keen to give him at least another chance. James was a personal gamble for Perez, and he’ll try to convince Zizou to help turn the player’s fortunes around. It won’t be easy though.
