Kovacic: new AC Milan boss Montella reportedly keen

Gazzetta dello Sport claims recently-appointed Rossoneri coach Vincenzo Montella has earmarked the Croat as a summer target.

Kovacic jugando con el Real Madrid

Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic is reportedly at the top of Vincenzo Montella's shopping list as the new AC Milan head coach looks to strengthen in midfield.

Rossoneri optimistic

Kovacic arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu last summer from Milan's neighbours, Inter, but found first-team opportunities limited in his opening campaign at Los Blancos.

And in light of the 22-year-old's struggles in Madrid, Gazzetta dello Sport says Milan are confident of their chances of taking him back to the Italy.

Kovacic made just 11 starts for Real Madrid last season.

Real keen to loan player

The Croatia international, who was part of his country's squad at Euro 2016, had appeared set for a loan switch to Roma.

But with that deal seemingly stalling, he has also been linked with Premier League sides Liverpool, Everton and West Ham United.

Kovacic made 34 appearances for Real last term, but started on just 11 occasions and was a substitute for Croatia at the European Championships.

Madrid's plan is understood to be to send the player out on loan to gain experience, although they are not completely ruling out a permanent transfer.
