Ángel María Villar, president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) since 1988, finally announced his intentions regarding the UEFA presidency, a post he will be running for when elections take place on 14 September in Athens as European football's governing body search for a replacement for Michel Platini, who was suspended by FIFA in October.

Villar announced his candidacy on the RFEF web page this evening. While other candidates, such as Michel Van Praag and Aleksander Ceferin have openly voiced their aspirations to step into the president's office, Villar has kept his silence for months but tomorrow he will be in the VIP box in Saint-Denis as UEFA's overseer, a role he has occupied since Platini's downfall.

The 66-year-old has been a member of UEFA's Executive Committee since 1992 and one of the organizations five vice-presidents since 2000. He is also on the panel of the Referees Committee and and is the stand-in president of the Player’s Status, Transfer and Agents and Match Agents Committee.
