Martin Odegaard’s proposed loan move to Stade Rennais has been called off by the Ligue 1 club due to concerns at Real Madrid over falling foul of Fifa regulations over the transfer of players under the age of 18.

"Real don't want to take any risks"

Martin won’t be coming this summer because of his age,” Stade Rennais sporting director Mikael Silvestre told French radio station RMC. “He is still a minor, he won’t be 18 until December. Real Madrid don’t want to take any risks. They are still under the threat of a Fifa sanction. The player will remain at Real Madrid. He can move to another Spanish club, but in any case he won’t be coming to Rennes.”

Castilla

Odegaard arrived at Madrid in January 2015 at the age of 16 and the club also incorporated his father, Hans, as part of the coaching staff at junior level to meet the criteria laid out by Fifa over the transfer of players under the age of 18. It was Odegaard senior who insisted that his son play for Castilla and train with the first team as a condition for signing for Madrid, in the face of competition from Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

Odegaard played 45 times for the reserve side, scoring two goals in the space of a season and a half. He made his senior debut on the final day of the 2014-15 season, playing 33 minutes against Getafe.
