Napoli leave it late to beat Milan in a bad-tempered thriller

New signing Arkadiusz Milik scored twice while AC Milan had two men sent off. Defending champions Juventus beat Lazio 1-0 in day’s earlier game.

Napoli leave it late to beat Milan in a bad-tempered thriller

Napoli squandered a two-goal halftime lead before scoring two late goals to beat nine-man AC Milan 4-2 in a stormy match which saw eight other players booked.

Poland striker Arkadiusz Milik, signed to replace Gonzalo Higuain following his hefty €90 million move to Juventus in the summer, scored twice in the first half to put Napoli in control.

M'baye Niang and Suso hit back in a four-minute spell early in the second half to pull Milan level but former Madrid forward Jose Callejon put Napoli back in front in the 74th minute. Milan’s Juraj Kucka was sent off after he was booked for a push on Dries Mertens and immediately given another yellow card for swearing at the referee. Niang was then given a second yellow card for pushing Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina before Alessio Romagnoli turned Lorenzo Insigne's shot into his own goal to complete Milan's misery.

Former Real Madrid man José Callejón scored Napoli's third goal.

Elsewhere, Lazio continued an unhappy run against Juventus in the day’s earlier game in sweltering conditions at the Stadio Olimpico, where the match was halted for a water break in the 28th minute. Sami Khedira settled matters in the 66th minute with the only goal of the game to extend the the champions' 13-year unbeaten run against Lazio, while coach Massimiliano Allegri enjoyed the luxury of starting Higuain and fellow new signing Miralem Pjanic on the bench.

Sami Khedira's goal continued Lazio's thirteen-year hoodoo against Juventus.
