Gareth Bale and Real Madrid have agreed a new six-year contract, according to reports in the British press on Sunday, which will see the Welshman earn €417,000 a week.

Despite having been the subject of persistent rumours linking him with a move back to the Premier League over the last two seasons, Bale is now settled at Madrid, while the club are in turn very happy with the player. The Real Madrid hierarchy was particularly impressed with the way the forward led his country, Wales, to the semifinals of the European Championships in the summer, as well as the way the player has begun to take on more responsibility at the club with his commanding performances.

"He's getting better and better still"

Wales coach Chris Coleman recognised the greater role that Bale is playing at Madrid earlier this week. "I know he's capable of almost anything and I think Madrid are very excited about the future with 'Baleo',” he said. "They recognise that they've got someone who's going to be there for a while and someone who is capable of winning everything. He's getting better and better still. Along with that incredible ability he's got that first-class mentality as well. It's winning formula for Real Madrid and for Wales, and I think he will have another good season.''

Wales take on Moldova in Cardiff on Monday night in their opening game of the World Cup 2018 qualifiers, with Bale and his Welsh teammates looking to continue the form they showed at Euro 2016 and take the country to its first World Cup since 1958.
