Newly-promoted Alavés shocked Spanish champions Barcelona at the Nou Camp with a smash-and-grab win to retain their unbeaten start to the season.

The Basque outfit took a shock lead just before half time when Deyverson got in front of Mascherano and toed the ball past a helpless Cillessen from a Femenía cross.

Barcelona out of sorts

While Deyverson's goal came firmly against the run of play, Barcelona -- who had left stars Lionel Messi, Iniesta and Luis Suarez on the bench -- were out-of-sorts in the first half. However it took Luis Enrique's men less than a minute to get back on level terms when the teams came back out for the second half.

The goal came from a Neymar corner and it was defender Mathieu who found himself on the end of it to head down into the corner. Mathieu then missed a glorious chance just two minutes later -- again from a corner -- to put Barcelona into the lead, however he blasted his shot wide when it seemed easier to score.

With the introduction of Messi after 60 minutes, Barcelona seemed the more likely to go on and win the game. However Barça were once again caught against the run of play after a failed Mascherano clearance allowed Gomez to break into the box and slide past Cillessen.

Messi unable to rescue draw

Barcelona reponded by bringing on Iniesta and Suarez, however they were unable to find the breakthrough despite enjoying almost all of the possession and pressure. When the ball fell to Messi in the 93rd minute, it seemed certain that Barcelona would grab a late equaliser, but the Argentinian dragged his shot past the post.

With that final chance gone begging, Alaves secured a historic win and handed Barcelona's rivals Real Madrid a (very early) advangtage in the title race.

AS IT HAPPENED:

FULL TIME: Barcelona 1-2 Alaves.

It's a huge turn up for the books. Newly promoted Alaves come away winners and extend their unbeaten run to the start of the season to three games. Quite incredible. Barcelona simply weren't at the races tonight, and not even the introduction of Messi, Iniesta and Suarez could swing the game in Barça's favour. A hugely impressive defensive performance from Alaves and their win hands Real Madrid a (very early) advangtage in the title race.

90 + 3 | CHANCE!!!! You'd bet your life on Messi scoring, but he doesn't. Good work from Digne down the left sees him break into the box and pull it back for the onrushing Argentinian. He puts his shot wide when it seemed certain he'd find the the net.

90 +1 | Suarez falls down in the box but the referee waves away claims for a penalty. Meanwhile, Alaves break and only a last gasp interception defies them the chance of a one-on-one opportunity to kill the game off.

90 | Three minutes of added time to be played.

87 | Neymar does his best to create some space with a lovely bit of skill but is crowded out by men in red. The story of Barça's night, really. Alaves have really done a job on them defensively.

85 | Five minutes (plus injury time) stands between Alaves and a historic win here. Can they do it? Barcelona, despite all their posession and pressure, haven't really threatened since going down.

79 | Luis Enrigue is looking decidedly edgy in his technical area. Alaves trying to slow this game right down and frustration begins to beset the faces of Barcelona's players.

75 | 15 minutes remain for Barça to find an equaliser. They are spraying the ball around and trying to find a way through, but Alaves are standing firm. This would be some shock if Alaves could hold out. 15 minutes is a long time when you're defending for your life at Camp Nou, though.

74 | Femenia, who provided the cross for Alaves' first goal, has been taken off for Vigaray.

71 | Garcia yellow carded for bringing down Mascherano on the edge of the box. Messi and Neymar stand over the free-kick. Messi takes it, but once again his effort flies harmlessly over and the chance goes begging.

65 | Barcelona respond to going behind once again by bringing on Luis Suarez, meaning MSN are together for the first time this season. But can they rescue Barça?

64 | GOOOOOOAL!!!! 1-2 Alaves! Gomez get it. Some shocking defending at the back from Mascherano lets Gomez in and he makes no mistake sliding it past Cillessen into the far corner.

63| SUB: Iniesta replaces Turan

62 | Messi's first contribution is to fire well-positioned free-kick 25-yards out way over the bar. Not his best effort, that.

60 | SUB: Here comes the magician. Messi replaces Denis Suarez.

56 | Barcelona are playing a lot better after the break. They're more incisive, more attacking, and looking likely to add to the equaliser. Messi and Iniesta, meanwhile, are warming up. That's a fearsome sight for Alaves fans.

54 | Mascherano is given a yellow card for catching Deyverson late.

50 | Alaves have the ball in the back of the net! But it's offside! Edgar is judged to have strayed in front of the Barça defence before guiding the ball into the bottom corner from a right wing cross. This second half has started at 100mph!

48 | CHANCE! Mathieu again from a corner, and boy what a miss! The ball falls to him three yards out and all he has to do is put it on target, but he puts his boot through it and unbelievably, sends it wide.

46 | GOOOOAL! 1-1. It took Barcelona less than a minute to get back on level terms. The goal came from a Neymar corner and it was Mathieu who found himself on the end of it to head down into the corner.

46 | Peeeeep! We're back underway at Camp Nou.

HALF TIME: Barcelona 0-1 Alaves. Well, well. Is there a shock on the cards here? Barcelona not really looking themselves, but Alaves really have contained them well. Luis Enrique will have to stir something in his side for the second half and it's almost certain that we'll be seeing the introduction of Lionel Messi to give Barça the cutting edge they were sorely lack in that first 45. Luis Suarez and Inisesta could also be called on to add some needed impetus too, of course.

45 | CHANCE! And that really should have been the equaliser. Turan lays it off to Rakitic on the penalty spot with a nod down, the Croatian controls it, make some space, and does everything right except find the net. He flashes his left-foot shot past the post when he really should have hit the target. And with that, it's half-time.

42 | Barça have responded well to going 1-0 down and have cranked up the pressure. Can Alaves hold out until half time?

39 | GOAL!!!! 0-1 Alaves!!! It comes completely against the run of play but it's a lovely finish from Deyverson after a sweet Kiko cross caught Barça napping at the back. Deyverson got in front of Mascherano and toed the ball past a helpless Cillessen. Wow, Alaves take a shock lead.

33 | It's another attacking free kick for Neymar. This time the Brazilian fools everyone by sliding a pass straight to Vidal, whose drive is once again deflected over for a corner. That move was straight off the training ground.

29 | Neymar standing over a dangerous freekick and it find Busquets competely free in the box. Luckily for the Spaniard, who completely fluffs the header, he's called offside. Alaves' offside trap worked a treat there. They're looking impressively organised at the back so far.

25 | Ball breaks to Vidal on the edge of the box but his shot is blocked by the last gasp challenge of Hernandez  and it flys out for a corner. Nothing comes of it however. Barça starting to find a little bit more rhythm.

22 | Turan's cross-shot sails high and wide. Looks like he slipped when trying to put that in, to be fair.

18 | First real half-chance for Barça goes to Rakitic who finds some space but shoots well wide when he really should have done a bit better.

17 | Alaves really keeping Barça at bay here. It's been an underwhelimg start from Luis Enrique's men but plenty of time on the clock for them to wear a solid Alaves side down, you would feel.

12 | First chance for Alaves as their number 11 Gomez breaks inside from the left and takes a pop shot from 30 yards. It bounces before it hits Cillessen though and that's an easy gather for the Barça keeper.

9 | Garcia stops Rakitic down the right after Neymar finds him with a pass. Pacheco, meanwhile, is booed by the Camp Nou faithful after taking his sweet time with Alaves' goal-kick.

5 | Alaves, unsurprisingly, have hardly seen the ball so far. Then again, most of the better teams in Europe struggle to get their share of posession when they come to Camp Nou. Nothing in the way of chances for Barça, though, yet.

3 | Neymar is once again in the thick of it as he get into a tangle on the edge of the Alaves box. He looks like he's taken down illegally but the referee waves on.

1 | Barcelona on the attack early. Blonde-bombshell Neymar (a la Messi) almost wriggles his way through four defenders but he's eventually stopped in his tracks. This could be a long night for the Alaves back line...

0 | Peeeeeep! And we're off

Barcelona - Alavés preview

As LaLiga resumes after the international break, home side Barcelona look to continue their 100% record to the new season following wins over Real Betis (6-2) and Athletic (0-1) in their opening two games of the campaign.

Top-flight new-boys Alavés, meanwhile, are also unbeaten so far this season with draws against Sporting (0-0) and Atlético (1-1), however most expect that record to change as they face the daunting task of playing the Spanish champions on their own patch.

Barcelona team news

Coach Luis Enrique confirmed on Friday that star striker Lionel Messi is fit enough to face Alavés but may be rested after suffering groins problems following Argentina’s 1-0 win over Uruguay last week (causing him to miss the qualifier with Venezuela).

Barcelona though will be able to count on Neymar for the first time this season after he led Brazil to Olympic gold in August. New signing Paco Alcacer could also make his debut after sealing a 30 million euro ($33 million) move from Valencia, whilst Arda Turan and Denis Suarez have also impressed in Neymar's absence.

Alavés team news

Mauricio Pellegrino's newly-promoted side have surprised many with their impressive start to the season, in which they pulled off a shock 1-1 draw against title-candidates Atlético Madrid on the opending day. Despite their two draws, Alavés have found goals hard to come by, only netting once.

New signing Aleksandar Katai, who arrived at the club on deadline day of the transfer window, could well be the answer for Alavés in front of the posts, however, with the club pinning high hopes on the Serbian winger. Also good news for Alavés is the fitness of defender Serbian Aleksandar Pantic, who has recovered from a muscle injury and will be available to play.
