Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has reduced his contract by two years from 2020 to 2018, negotiating a new deal with the club that will see him earn a salary rise and continue his status as the best paid coach in La Liga.

Simeone wanted to leave

Contract talks began days after Simeone transmitted his wish to leave the club following Atléti’s Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in May. Chief Executive Miguel Ángel Gil though insisted that the club would only let him go if his release clause was met. However, with none of the clubs interested in Simeone at the time (PSG and Inter) willing to pay the clause, Simeone decided to stay on the condition that he get a new deal at the Vicente Calderón.

Free to go in 2018

When ‘Cholo’ was asked last week about his future at Atlético Madrid, the coach confirmed that it lay in the Spanish capital, however, with this new contract Simeone will be free to leave in 2018 without having to stump up any penalisation fee to the club for breaking any agreement.
