Las Palmas 2-2 Real Madrid: full-time summary

Real Madrid were held to a second consecutive LaLiga draw on Saturday night as Las Palmas twice pegged Zinedine Zidane's men back at the Estadio Gran Canaria.

Despite being denied the win, Real stay top of the league - one point ahead of arch rivals Barcelona, who thumped Sporting Gijón 5-0 earlier in the day.

Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid had to settle for a point at the Estadio Gran Canaria.

Real ahead through Asensio

A frenetic first half saw Marco Asensio put Madrid in front shortly following the half-hour mark, the 20-year-old nodding in the loose ball after Las Palmas goalkeeper Javi Varas had saved Nacho Fernández's low effort.

Asensio celebrates giving Real the lead.

Tana equalises for Las Palmas

Just five minutes later, however, Real central defender Raphael Varane could only glance Momo's left-wing cross for Las Palmas on to Tana, who - in acres of space in the away side's area - produced a smart finish past keeper Kiko Casilla to level.

Tana wheels away after making it 1-1.

Benzema makes it 2-1 to Madrid

Substitute Karim Benzema seemed to put the visitors back on course for victory midway through the second 45, pouncing to fire into the net from close range when Varas parried Cristiano Ronaldo's shot.

Benzema (centre) restores Madrid's lead from close range.

Araujo grabs point for the home team

But with Real appearing to have the hosts under control in the second period and looking set to get back to winning ways after Wednesday's 1-1 stalemate against Villarreal, sub Sergio Araujo latched on to Vicente Gómez's headed pass in the closing minutes to bundle the ball past Casilla and in at the near post.

Araújo taps in after bundling past Casilla.

Here's how it happened:

Las Palmas 2-2 Real Madrid: second half

Peeep! That's it. Sergio Araujo's late leveller prevents Real Madrid from getting back to winning ways at Las Palmas, although Zinedine Zidane's men do reclaim top spot from Barcelona, who had provisionally leapfrogged their rivals after thrashing Sporting Gijón earlier today. Karim Benzema's strike looked to have earned Los Blancos all three points, but after 16 straight LaLiga wins they've now been restricted to consecutive draws.

Min 94 | Isco heads over! Modric slips Carvajal in on the right, he looks up and flights it towards the midfielder arriving in the box, but he plants his effort off target! Casilla then has to race out of his box to thwart a Las Palmas break.

Min 93 | Tana was booked a couple of moments ago, by the way.

Min 92 | Ufff, that's a chance for Benzema. Carvajal crosses once, but it's headed away; the ball is recycled back to the right-back and he swings it in again, finding Benzema at the back post...but he volleys it over. Tana was booked a couple of minutes ago, by the way.

Min 90 | Four minutes of added time.

Min 88 | Modric slaps a shot towards goal from outside of the area, but Varas gathers at the second attempt.

Min 86 | Real immediately go in search of a winner, Bale swinging over a cross to Benzema at the back post - but the Frenchman can't connect properly with it. Mauricio Lemos comes on for Livaja for the home side.

Min 83 | Gooooal to Las Palmas! I was just writing that Real have really managed to strangle Las Palmas' attacking threat as this second half has worn on...and the commentator's curse strikes! 2-2! Vicente Gómez cushions a lovely header to meet Araujo's run into the box on the left, and the Argentine gets there before Casilla at the near post, his shot blocked by the keeper but bouncing back off him to leave an open goal to tap into!

Min 79 | On comes Isco in the away team's final substitution, with Morata off. That's the former Málaga midfielder's 100th LaLiga appearance for Real Madrid, by the way.

Min 78 | Isco is preparing to come on for Real.

Min 77 | TV replays showed Cristiano throwing something or other down in anger on the bench a few moments ago. On the pitch, Carvajal earns himself a yellow for a late challenge on Tana, presenting the hosts with a chance to send a delivery into the box. It's dealt with easily, though.

Min 71 | Second sub for Real Madrid, and it's Cristiano who's making way, to a chorus of jeers from the home fans. He doesn't look chuffed. Lucas Vázquez skips on in his stead.

Min 67 | Second substitution for Las Palmas, Momo coming off for Sergio Araujo.

Min 66 | Gooooal for Real Madrid! Benzema puts Los Blancos back in front! Morata slipped in Cristiano running into the box, and though CR7's shot was parried by Varas, Benzema was there to knock in the rebound with his left! 2-1!

Min 64 | Bale then charges towards the byline on the right, but his attempted ball across goal hits a the boot of a yellow shirt and Varas gathers. Real look to have switched to something approaching a 4-2-4, with CR7, Benzema, Morata and Bale in attack - they're really going for it now.

Min 63 | Benzema could, and possibly should, score with his first touch! Kroos delivers the resulting corner, Varane knocks it down towards the far post...but the striker can't bring it under his spell!

Min 62 | Cristiano chests it down and takes on Michel on the right, the Portuguese looking to get it into the middle - but it's cut out for a corner. And there's a first change for Real, Karim Benzema trotting on for Asensio.

Min 61 | Vicente shoots, but it's comfortable for Casilla. It's touched back to the midfielder on the right-hand corner of the 18-yard box, but he can't quite get hold of his attempt and it trundles towards the Madrid keeper.

Min 59 | El Zhar's knockdown finds Michel bursting dangerously towards the Real area in the right-hand channel, before the Brazilian fires at goal - but it's well off target.

Min 58 | Kroos earns himself a yellow after catching Vicente in an aerial challenge.

Min 56 | Cristiano has it in the net - but he's offside! Bale bundles his way through into the box, the ball then falling loose to the Portual captain in front of goal, and he controls and finishes. There's little argument that he's standing in an illegal position, though.

Min 53 | El Zhar is on. David García is booked for his protests after Sergio Ramos appears to handle it before claiming that it was with his chest.

Min 51 | Viera is down and looks like he's going to have to come off, and Nabil El Zhar - remember him, Liverpool fans? - is readying himself to be introduced.

Min 50 | Modric scurries forward and slips it to Cristiano on the right-hand corner of the box, and the striker controls, looks up and shoots - but it's blocked.

Min 46 | Good break there from Cristiano, the Portuguese sprinting forward on the left and feeding Bale to pummel a shot towards the corner. Varas gets down to keep it out, however, and although Asensio is there to latch onto the loose ball he's yards offside and the assistant referee's flag duly shoots up.

Peep! The second half is up and running! No changes for either team. Are Real Madrid heading for a second straight draw?

Las Palmas 1-1 Real Madrid: half-time summary

Peeep! That's half time, and it's honours even so far. It's been an intense first 45 at the Estadio Gran Canaria, where Asensio gave Real the lead after a great forward burst from Nacho, only for the hosts to bite back almost immediately with a smart finish from Tana.

Las Palmas 1-1 Real Madrid: first half

Min 43 | Kroos locates Bale at the back of the box with a neat, lofted pass, the Welshman bringing it down and powering a shot at Varas - who beats it out!

Min 41 | Las Palmas are up in arms at the lack of advantage from the ref there. He blows for a foul by Sergio Ramos on Vicente on the halfway line - but with the ball flying through over the pair's heads, Livaja was already picking it up and preparing to attack Madrid's backline. The Croat ain't happy.

Min 38 | Equaliser for Las Palmas! Real's lead lasts just a few minutes! Momo's left-wing cross finds Tana in space at the back stick, and he produces instant control before coolly sliding a left-footed finish low into Casilla's far corner. 1-1.

Min 32 | Gooooooal to Real Madrid! Asensio gets it! Superb play from left-back Nacho Fernández - in for the injured Marcelo - who brings it forwards into the Las Palmas area like an express train, before seeing his left-foot shot across goal parried by Varas, only as far as the head of Asensio, who nods it in off the ground and into the net from close range.

Min 30 | Bale skins Dani Castellano all ends up and advances into the box on the right...but with Morata lurking in the middle he prods his cross too close to Varas. It's been a watchable opening half hour.

Min 29 | Back up the Real end, Tana momentarily looks to be in - but the flag is up.

Min 27 | Real come forward dangerously, but Asensio hits his cross at the first man with Cristiano waiting in the centre.

Min 26 | Morata fails with a limp overhead kick, before Tana really might have done better for Las Palmas at the other end! Viera dinks it over the top for the 26-year-old, and with Casilla coming out to meet him he watches the ball drop over his head...and can't get a proper connection on it. A let-off for the guests.

Min 24 | Now that is a goalmouth scramble. Gareth Bale sends Dani Carvajal scampering towards the right byline for the full-back to cut it inside for Cristiano. His close-range effort is blocked, with the ball spinning to Morata. The striker's attempt to get a shot away is also cut out, before Carvajal then brings García down amid a flurry of flying boots, and Las Palmas have a free-kick with which to clear.

Min 22 | There's the first booking of the match, and it's for Las Palmas' Roque Mesa for not retreating sufficiently as Modric took a free-kick.

Min 20 | TV replays appear to show García did handle the ball on that Morata-Asensio breakaway, but outside of the area.

Min 18 | Oooh, that's nice from the hosts. Momo knocks it first-time to find Viera's run into the box, but the attacking midfielder is stretching and can't quite get a hold of it - a shame, as he had a clear sight of goal.

Min 16 | Morata cuts inside into the area on the left and curls a low shot towards Varas' far post, but it's way too close to the keeper and he won't be troubled by that one in your proverbial month of Sundays.

Min 15 | Cristiano looks up and shoots not too far wide from range with Varas scrambling towards his right-hand post.

Min 13 | Oh dear Ronnie! Morata cuts it back to Cristiano at the top of the area, and the former Manchester United man miscontrols horribly to lose the shooting chance. He really doesn't look in particularly marvellous nick, does our Ronaldo.

Min 12 | Real are twice appealing, and twice the man in the middle says nope. Modric gets Morata scuttling through on the left, with Marco Asensio supporting him through the middle and in on goal if the striker can find him. His attempt to clip it actross to Asensio looks to hit defender David García on the arm, before Cristiano Ronaldo barrels onto the loose ball and flops down under the challenge of right-back Michel Macedo. Nothing doing on either count.

Min 10 | Jonathan Viera tries to find Tana with a clipped through pass over the top, but it's misjudged and Kiko Casilla trots out to claim comfortably.

Min 8 | Real test Varas again! Kroos flights in a free-kick from the left byline, and Álvaro Morata leaps to power his header towards the onion bag - but the Las Palmas custodian is alert to tip it over. The corner then comes to zip.

Min 6 | Uff! There's the first real chance of the match. Toni Kroos robs Momo ten yards or so inside the Las Palmas half and strides forward before firing low at goal, but it's too close to Varas and the keeper repels the German's effort.

Min 3 | First sight of goal for either side and it's Cristiano Ronaldo with it for Real Madrid, cutting inside but sclaffing a tame, mishit effort wide across Javi Varas' posts.

Min 1 | Real Madrid have won their last nine away games in LaLiga, the last four without conceding a goal, which in my book is reasonable form on the road. Can they make it ten in a row and get back to winning ways after their midweek stalemate at home to Villarreal?

Peeep! Mr Estrada Fernández gets us underway at the Estadio Gran Canaria!

3 mins to kick-off | The players take to the field!

5 mins to kick-off | The teams are in the tunnel! All looking resplendent in their anthem jackets (formerly known as tracky tops).

Las Palmas vs Real Madrid: live updates

19:50 | Las Palmas' line-up sees seven changes from the team that started the 4-1 defeat to Real Sociedad, with Michel Macedo, David García, Aythami Artiles, Momo, Marko Livaja, Vicente Gómez and Jonathan Viera all coming back in.

19:43 | Five changes for Real from the draw with Villarreal, as Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernández are in for Danilo and the injured Marcelo at full-back, while Luka Modric and Marco Asensio come into the midfield to accompany Toni Kroos, who drops back into the deep-lying role to cover the absence of the crocked Casemiro. Up front, meanwhile, Karim Benzema makes way for Álvaro Morata at the tip of the attack.

19:30 | There has been much recent talk about the BBC, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in far from tip-top nick and the likes of Álvaro Morata and Lucas Vázquez knocking on the door. Real Madrid-mad Tomás Roncero has offered his thoughts on the issue... And just as I type that, the Real team is announced (see above) - with Benzema on the bench!

19:25 | The AS English oracle has spoken - and reckons Real will have to settle for a point tonight...

19:20 | Keylor Navas is back in the Real Madrid squad for the first time since the Champions League final, although Kiko Casilla is expected to keep his place in goal for the visitors today.

19:10 | Real Madrid have won their past three against Las Palmas, last losing to the Canary Islanders in October 2001, when Los Blancos' current boss scored this more than passable free-kick

19:05 | With Marcelo and Casemiro crocked for Real, Toni Kroos is set to drop into the deeper midfield position, while Nacho Fernández is in contention to deputise at left-back. And the academy graduate is something of a lucky charm for Los Merengues: he hasn't been on the losing side since November 2015.

18:12 | Having started the matchday top of the pile, Real have now been provisionally leapfrogged by arch rivals Barcelona after their 5-0 win over Sporting Gijón, which finished just a few moments ago. Get the lowdown on Los Azulgranas' victory here

15:30 | Despite being outplayed last season in the corresponding fixture. Madrid snatched maximum points via a late Casemiro goal. Here's how it transpired.

14:30 | Much has been made of the Madrid players missing for the game but it's worth noting too that royal signing Kevin-Prince Boateng is suspended after his hand ball sending off against La Real midweek.

14:00 | By the time we kick off in Las Palmas, reigning Liga champions Barcelona will already have played. They visit Sporting in Gijón in just over two hours and football hipster Paul will be adding his magic through the keyboard to keep you entertained.

13:15 | It's not all about kicking a ball, upon arrival last night the Real Madrid players were involved in a signing session with fans. Zidane will be hoping that Keylor and Casilla have no wrist problems today.

12:20 | Last season's fixture on the island finished 1-2 with goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro getting the win for the away side. Willian José had given Los Blancos a scare by equalising in the 87th minute only to see Casemiro extinguish their hopes two minutes later.

11:10 | If you'd rather watch or listen to the game - instead of following our inimitable words on your online device - then here are some options. Don't say we're not good to you.

10:35 | Balmy 21 degrees in Las Palmas and should be back to this level by the time the evening kick-off takes place. Clearly a few refreshments will be need in the intervening period.

Las Palmas vs Real Madrid: Preview Week 6 LaLiga Santander

Both teams come into tonight's match after strong starts to the season and hungry for the three points. The positivity around each club was dampened in their last outings as Las Palmas lost heavily against Real Sociedad (4-1) and Madrid drew at home to Villarreal (1-1) spoiling their goal of holding the record of most consecutive league wins by themselves.

Las Palmas

Manager Quique Setién and his island troops are having a dream time back with the big boys of Spanish football sitting in 5th place having won three of their opening five fixtures inlcuding their two at home. They will go into this game cautious though after their midweek Anoeta experience and knowing that today's opponents need to get back on the winning trail. Las Palmas have surprised and impressed so far and in the centre of the field have Roque Mesa, who Zidane will be wary of.

It was Roque Mesa himself who warned his side of the danger posed by the BBC but also said that Luka Modric was "half of Real Madrid" so he may be hoping that the Croatian is not inlcuded in the starting XI. Out for the home side are Pedro Bigas, Lemos and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Real Madrid

Los Blancos arrive in Gran Canaria following their first blow to their perfect start after being frustrated on Wednesday night against Villarreal. Zidane will also have one eye of their Champions League tie on Tuesday in Dortmund although he will not want to take any chances with a team that has shone in the early stages of this season. With Casemiro and Marcelo out injured - two players that have become very important to the team - and some doubts around the current effectiveness of the BBC, Zidane may look to use some of his less experienced, but very talented, squad members than that planned for the German challenge in a few days time. In saying this, patience and forward planning isn't something he'll be blessed with as each game played carries significant weight and serious questions will be asked if top stars are left out and things don't go their way with the scoreline.

Despite the disappointed that went with the dropped points at home this week, Madrid still sit atop the table and didn't give away any more ground to their two main rivals, Barcelona and Atlético who drew against each other. The return to the squad of Keylor Navas is another positive. Expect too to see another chance for the James resurrection under Zidane.
