His mother had been diagnosed with cancer in the brain over two years ago and the Brazilian player had made it clear in recent months that he had some personal problems. In that message he said:
"I am following this battle while away from you. It is not what I wanted and if I could I would be by your side twenty-four hours giving you all the love, affection and power to get you through this. But unfortunately my profession does not allow me to do so.
It's been challenging, but with faith in God everything will be fine and you will be back as you were before. Because to see your smile makes me happy and comforts my heart. Get better soon mum."
An emotional goodbye shared with the world
In his update today he posted a poem in his native language along with a picture of himself with his mother. One part of the poem read:
"I miss you so much. This is true. But I accept this because we are going to live together for all eternity.
"I'll continue here on earth, faithful to the Lord's teachings, so that I can be like you and also have the Kingdom of Heaven."
The Chelsea website carried a simple message:
"All of us at Chelsea Football Club are sending our love and deepest condolences to Willian and his family after the passing of his mother.
We are thinking of you Willian."
