Could Agüero be the next casualty of the Pep revolution?
Reports in the British press suggest that the prolific striker could follow in the steps of Yaya Touré and Joe Hart and find himself out in the cold in Manchester.
Sergio Agüero close to City exit?
Sergio Agüero could be next on Pep Guardiola’s list of players to leave Manchester City. Reports in the British press say that the Argentine could find himself surplus to requirements at the Etihad as the ‘Guardiola revolution’ gathers steam, much like Joe Hart (who chose to move away on loan to Torino in Italy) and Yaya Touré.
If Agüero does move towards the exit door it would mirror the case of Samuel Eto’o, who Guardiola used to great effect in his first season at Barcelona but who was then pushed out as part of the deal that brought Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the club in 2009.
Kun has been prolific under Pep, scoring 11 goals in just 10 games, but he was dropped to the bench for the 4-0 defeat against Barcelona, only coming on ten minutes from the end when the game was already decided. Now in his sixth season at the club since signing from Atlético Madrid in 2011, Agüero enjoys iconic status at Manchester City having scored the stoppage-time winner against Queens Park Rangers that won the club the Premier League title in 2012.
Palmeiras striker Gabriel Jesus will arrive in January having signed for City during the summer transfer window in a deal worth over €30 million, while the club is also said to be closely tracking Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emereick Aubameyang and Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
Vincent Kompany's future is also up in the air
Agüero might not even be the only big name to be on his way out. Club captain Vincent Kompany was not named in the squad to face Barcelona despite reportedly being fit and could also be close to leaving the club. The arrival of John Stones could mean that the Belgian, who has suffered with injury problems in recent years, will struggle to regain his place in the side.
