Second operation

Augusto Fernández underwent a second operation on his injured right knee on Tuesday, a complimentary intervention to the one he had back on 27 September. The procedure to which the Argentinean was submitted is known as Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation - a relatively-new technique in which damaged cartilage is extracted then new cells are grown in a laboratory for between four to six weeks. The reformed chondrocytes are then gratfed back on to the knee joint in a second, open-knee operation.

Six weeks' rest

Doctor Pedro Guillén and his medical team, together with Doctor Villalón performed the operation at the CEMTRO Clinic in Madrid. Now Augusto must remain for six weeks without applying any pressure on his knee before he can move onto the next stage in his rehabilitation.
