Club América 0-2 Real Madrid: summary
Real Madrid reached the final of the Club World Cup at the expense of Club América with goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo giving Zinedine Zidane's side a 2-0 victory over the Concacaf Champions League winners.
The Spanish side were far from at their best in Yokohama against Ricardo La Volpe's América, who were occasionally threatening on the break but lacked precision in the final third and rarely called Keylor Navas into action.
Benzema opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time when he latched on to Toni Kroos' through ball to fire past Moises Muñoz and Ronaldo raced through in what would eventually be the final move of the game to fire a low shot into the far corner, but the Portuguese was forced to wait to find out of he had scored his first goal in Club World Cup competition while the video assistant referee studied his position when he started his run.
The result is what Zidane would have wanted but the performance left little that will linger in the memory as Real appeared to be still suffering the effects of the lengthy journey to Japan. América, who had arrived almost a week earlier, looked brighter in spells but could not find the finishing touch to complement some good spells of possession and the occasional threatening foray towards the Real goal.
Madrid will go on to play Kashima Antlers in Sunday's final in the same stadium, where the Japanese side will enjoy vociferous support as they seek to spring another surprise and prevent Real from claiming the trophy.
Club América 0-1 Real Madrid: as it happened
Min 93 | This video referee business is going to get a bit messy... nobody seemed to know what was going on there but it looks like the screen-botherers suspected Ronaldo was offside and alerted the ref. After some quizzical looks and a couple of waved arms he decides nothing doing and strolls back to the centre circle and places the ball on the spot. The goal stands, it's 2-0 and game over!
Min 93 | Gooooooooal! Out of nowhere Ronaldo finds himself through and he drills a low shot past Muñoz... but hold on, the video assistant referee is getting involved...
Min 91 | William sends in a teasing cross but it's just too high for Peralta. That could well be América's final roll of the dice...
Min 90 | Good work from Morata on the right to lose a couple of defenders and he squares for Vázquez but the winger can't get a shot off under pressure. Nacho goes in the book for a clumsy challenge and there will be three minutes of added time.
Min 88 | Close! Vázquez plays Marcelo in with a neat chip and the Brazilian finds Morata, who turns to make a yard of space and fires a shot just wide of the post.
Min 87 | Time is running out for América to find an equaliser and Real are understandably happy to stroke it around at the back for a bit.
Min 85 | Marcelo darts down the left and puts in a fizzing cross that Ronaldo can't quite reach and Vázquez can't quite control.
Min 83 | América have been decent going forward throughout the game but have too often lacked ideas when it comes to the final ball. Peralta this time finds a Madrid player on the edge of the area.
Min 81 | Vázquez gets away down the right but Pablo Aguilar makes a good covering block to cut out the Galician's cross.
Min 80 | Goal scorer Benzema is heading off with Álvaro Morata on for the final 10 minutes.
Min 78 | Chance for América as Arroyo outpaces Varane but Nach is there to clear the danger.
Min 76 | Benzema and Carvajal combine to send the full back through but he's bundles off the ball just as he was shaping to shoot.
Min 73 | Modric tries his luck from distance but his shot is straight at Muñoz, who gathers easily.
Min 71 | And Zidane makes his first change in response, James Rodríguez coming on for Toni Kroos.
Min 69 | Another change for América as Michael Arroyo comes on for Silvio Romero.
Min 67 | Carvajal does well to nick th eball in midfield but his touch lets him down as he cruises into the area. Real looking dangerous on the break now as they seek to find a second goal to settle the game.
Min 65 | Whoops! Vázquez sends in a perfect cross but Benzema and Ronaldo get their wires crossed and the Portuguese ends up heading the ball away from goal. Modric tries an acrobatic shot on the turn and it's just wide. That should have been 2-0.
Min 63 | The free kick is a good one, curling into the danger area, but Real are equal to it and clear.
Min 62 | Free kick to América in a dangerous position on the right after Marcelo leaves a boot in.
Min 60 | Ronaldo brings a smart block out of Goltz with a shot. América make a change, Carlos Quintero coming on for the lively Ibarra.
Min 57 | Benzema and Ronaldo go all Led Zeppelin, communication between the two breaking down just when a break was on.
Min 55 | Good work from Bruno Valdez on the right to get past Marcelo and Nacho but his cross is overhit.
Min 53 | Carvajal finds himself behind the América defence but can't keep the ball in play with Ronaldo and Benzema unmarked in the middle.
Min 51 | Kroos sends it in but it's a bit heavy and whacks Benzema on the head, rather than the other way around, and the ball flies out for a goal kick.
Min 50 | Free kick to Real on the right as Samudio clatters into Lucas Vázquez.
Min 49 | Modric puts Ronaldo through with a clever ball behind the América defence but the Portuguese is called offside.
Min 47 | Modric goes down under a challenge from Sambueza, who raked his studs down the back of the Croatian's ankle there. Nasty.
Min 46 | We're back underway in Yokohama, Karim Benzema's goal at the end of the first half separating the sides.
Club América 0-1 Real Madrid: first half
Min 46 | Gooooooooal! Benzema finds the back of the net from the left with a neat outside-of-the-boot finish from Toni Kroos' cunning through ball. And that's the half! 1-0 to Real. Barely deserved but Zidane will settle for it and La Volpe has a face like thunder as the teams trudge off.
Min 45 | América manage to wriggle through the Madrid defence but the final ball is a little heavy and Navas is on hand to gather.
Min 43 | Marcelo puts in a cross and appeals for a deflection but the ref isn't moved and América get a goal kick as we meander towards half-time in Yokohama.
Min 41 | Ronaldo and Modric combine on the left but the América defence isn't fooled by the flickery and trickery and gets it clear with cool efficiency.
Min 40 | Benzema is through again, tests Muñoz again, but is also offside again.
Min 36 | William da Silva turns on the afterburners and leaves the Madrid defence eating his dust, and his shot from distance is tricky enough for Navas to bop it out for the corner. América come again and but for lack of a final ball could have been in there... they're looking the more dangerous side at the moment.
Min 34 | Close again! Vázquez and Ronaldo combine on the right and the Portuguese glances a cross-shot across the face of goal.
Min 32 | Ronaldo's initial shot is poor, straight in to the wall again, but his follow up snap shot with his left draws a fine save from Muñoz. Benzema then has the ball in the net but the Frenchman was called offside.
Min 30 | Another free-kick for Real as Vázquez is bundled to the floor. Ronaldo lining it up...
Min 28 | 61 percent possession for Real so far but América have looked sporadically dangerous on the break.
Min 26 | Kroos has a pop from distance but it doesn't trouble Muñoz. La Volpe said his side would man-mark Real but there's been little evidence of that so far, América sitting back and inviting Madrid to come at them.
Min 25 | Ronaldo! The Portuguese meets a cross from Vázquez but sees his glancing header come back off the post.
Min 23 | Real have another free-kick, Kroos takes charge of this one but it's straight on to the head of an América defender and back out from whence it came.
Min 22 | Ronaldo hits it, but it hits the wall... not a great effort from the Portuguese there.
Min 20 | América have a crack through Ibarra but it's straight at Navas. Ronaldo is then floored at the other end and Real have a free-kick...
Min 19 | It's all a bit flat at the moment if we're being perfectly honest. The game could use a spark...
Min 16 | Real take a short corner and Vázquez pings in a cross but it's cleared easily. Not a lot of invention in Real's attacking pay so far.
Min 14 | Ronaldo hits the post, but he was offside. Didn't look like he knew about it when he pulled the trigger but there was no finger-wagging remonstration for the lino's efforts.
Min 12 | A poor touch from Casemiro gifts possession to América, but they're forced back to Muñoz under pressure from Real's front line, with Vázquez doing his usual road runner thing to keep the Mexican side on the back foot.
Min 10 | Ronaldo brushes off a challenge, surges forward and takes a shot but it's not his best effort and goes wide. Ibarra then has a pop at the other end but it's also askew and Navas watches it sail harmlessly past his post.
Min 8 | América have a bit of time on the ball but fail to find a way through and Real regain possession, Marcelo going on a gallop down the left but his cross is poor and LUcas Vázque does well to keep the move going but is herded out of play.
Min 6 | Corner to Madrid now as Marcelo seeks Ronaldo at the back stick and the América defence ping it behind. Vázquez has a crack from the clearance but it's more dangerous for the cameramen than Muñoz.
Min 4 | An América corner causes a spot of bother in the Real defence, but a boot is slung just as a shot is being shaped and it's hooked clear.
Min 3 | Ronaldo pulls off a trick for the gallery, much to the delight of the crowd, then Carvajal pops up a cross but it's straight into the paws of Muñoz.
Min 2 | Real go forward, Ronaldo getting his first touch, then retreat all the way back to Keylor Navas under pressure from América. La Volpe said his side would come out swinging and it looks like they intend to hassle Madrid all the way.
Min 1 | Here we go! Real in their black third strip and América rocking a rather daring yellow and white number. La Volpe's tache is twitching in anticipation on the touchline as the ball rolls off the spot...
11:25 | Here come the players, the handshakes are underway and kick off is imminent. A minute's silence for the victims of the Chapecoense air tragedy will precede kick-off.
11:20 | The players are in the tunnel, Ronaldo making some kids very happy with a load of fives and a big smile.
11:15 | The players are suitable warmed, it a chilly seven degrees in Yokohama, and we're about to get underway.
11:05 | Crickey. It might only be the warm-up but Lucas Vázquez isn't going to trouble América keeper Moises Muñoz with that.
11:00 | The players are out on the pitch going through their paces as the stands gradually start to fill up. Cristiano Ronaldo, immaculately coiffed, looking focused as he pelts a few shots goalwards.

Club América-Real Madrid: live updates
10:40 | Ronaldo has yet to score at the Club World Cup. In 2014, when Real Madrid won the tournament in Morocco, Sergio Ramos (2), Gareth Bale (2), Isco and Karim Benzema provided the goals.
10:25 | Few surprises in the Real Madrid line-up, with Nacho and Varane in the heart of defence, Casemiro anchoring the midfield and Benzema and Ronaldo up front.
10:15 | The odds are stacked against América today, with Real priced at 2/11 to win and the Mexican side at 12/1, but it was probably a similar story yesterday...
10:10 | Mariano has been extremely effective for Real Madrid this season, bagging five goals at a rate of one every 31 minutes on the pitch. Will he get a run out today?
09:50 | The Video Assistant Referee system took a controversial bow in Wednesday's game between Kashima and Atlético Nacional.
09:30 | We should have some team news before too long but Sergio Ramos has definitely been ruled out of the semi-final while Pepe is a doubt.
09:05 | Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the Real players who featured in a 2010 friendly against Club América, when he scored this stunning free-kick in a 3-2 victory.
08:50 | Kashima Antlers sprung quite the surprise yesterday in thrashing Atlético Nacional 3-0. Can Club América do likewise today? The Mexican side's coach Ricardo La Volpe said "shirts don't win games" ahead of the match, promising a no-holds-barred approach to thwarting the European champions.
Club América-Real Madrid: match preview
The UEFA Champions League winners are bidding to clinch the Club World Cup for a second time, while América are out to become the first team from Mexico to make the final of the competition.
The pair will battle it out for the right to meet Kashima Antlers in the title decider - also to be held in Yokohama - after the Japanese hosts sprang a surprise by defeating Atlético Nacional 3-0 in Wednesday's opening last-four clash.
Following quarter-final disappointment at the 2015 tournament, Club América are back for a second year running, this time safely negotiating the last eight with victory over South Koreans Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
The CONCAFAF Champions League holders now face the daunting task of upsetting the 2014 winners, a side on a club-record unbeaten run, in the last four.
But América head coach Ricardo La Volpe was not intimidated by his illustrious opponents as he looked ahead to the tie in his pre-match press conference.
"It's players and not shirts that win games," La Volpe declared. "We’ll go out to play Real Madrid without any kind of burden on our shoulders."
History is on the side of Zinedine Zidane's Real team, who lifted an unprecedented 11th European crown in May to qualify for this year's event.
Madrid, who also have three Intercontinental Cup wins to their name - in 1960, 1998 and 2002 - are yet to lose a Club World Cup match (not including penalties).
What's more, Los Merengues' Club World Cup success two years ago saw them beat another Liga MX outfit, Cruz Azul, in the semis.
However, they'll be without captain and crucial-goal specialist Sergio Ramos - who netted in both Real's games at Morocco 2014 - with the centre-back joining long-term injury absentee Gareth Bale on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Ramos' defensive colleague Pepe is doubtful.
Club América-Real Madrid: possible line-ups
Club América: Muñoz, Váldez, Álvarez, Goltz, Aguilar, Samudio, Martínez, William, Quintero, Romero, Peralta.
Real Madrid: Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Pepe, Marcelo, Modric, Casemiro, Isco, Vázquez, Benzema, Cristiano.
