If you had the power to simply pull out your phone and call Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, all in the name of impressing your mates, you’d probably do it, wouldn’t you?
Well that’s exactly what Sheffield Wednesday club captain Jose Semedo did at his team’s Christmas party in Amsterdam back in November.
Portuguese player Semedo grew up with Ronaldo and remains one of his best friends to this day, regularly meeting up, talking on the phone and even going on his holidays with the Galactico.
The thing is, Semedo’s teammates Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher wouldn’t believe just how close he actually is to the Ballon d’Or winner. So, after being demanded to give proof, Semedo agreed to call Ronaldo on Facetime in the middle of the party.
"Oh my God, I'm talking to Ronaldo!"
'Barry and Steven Fletcher were asking me to ring Cristiano. They thought I'd say no, no, let's not do that,' Semedo told the Daily Mail. 'So I FaceTimed him. They knew we were friends, but didn't really realise how close we are.'
According to Semedo, Ronaldo told the Sheffield Wednesday players he wanted them to win promotion to the Premier League after hearing good things about the club from his friend. Ronaldo said he also plans to visit Hillsborough in the near future to get a taste of the atmosphere.
'They couldn't believe it,' Semedo added. 'He was talking to them normally, like he knows Bannan or Fletcher like a friend. It was crazy, they couldn't believe it, saying "Oh my God, I'm talking to Ronaldo!". ‘I hope he can make it over, I want him to come for the fans. I want them to see Ronaldo, a huge star, step on to their pitch.'
Semedo, meanwhile, is looking to make his first appearance since August after a spell on the sidelines on Sunday, when Wednesday travel to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
