Sevilla rally sees Zidane's unbeaten streak end at 40

Real Madrid's French head coach Zinedine Zidane looks down before the Spanish league football match Sevilla FC vs Real Madrid CF at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in Sevilla on January 15, 2017

A Ronaldo goal ignited Sevilla, who sealed victory through a Sergio Ramos own-goal and a late Stefan Jovetic strike to throw the title race wide open.

Real Madrid-Celta Live

Sevilla 2-1 Real Madrid: Report

It took a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty to kickstart Sevilla's night but you think Real Madrid might have taken a point if they knew that the penalty would awaken the sleeping giant. Sevilla failed to create meaningful chances all night and when they went behind after 67 minutes, you got the sense, along with the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, that they would struggle to get one, let alone two. The first did come and the second followed soon after. What looked like a free in a manageable area was swung into the penalty are before Sergio Ramos headed it into his own net. Just five minutes later, super sub Stefan Jovetic cut inside Real Madrid's defense and slotted home despite Keylor Navas getting a relatively strong hand to it. Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid's 40 game unbeaten streak is over and Sevilla are just a point behind Real Madrid as it stands - Real Madrid have a game in hand.

Sevilla 2-1 Real Madrid: Second half

FT: A late, late comeback sees Sevilla clinch all three points!

Min 90 + 2 | That is two goals in two games for Joevtic in a Sevilla shirt. Two in two against Real Madrid too.

Min 90 + 2 | GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Jovetic scores as he curls past Navas despite the goalkeeper getting a hand on the ball.

Min 90 | Ronaldo hand balls it in a dangerous position for Sevilla as they look to win this one! This would be an incredible victory if they managed to find a goal.

Min 88 | Casemiro has his pocket picked and Vitolo is the thief. He hesitates just a second and gets a cross in but Real Madrid clear. The Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan have found their voice again. This is the game we were promised.

Min 87 | Jovetic runs down the line, cuts inside and fires a shot that Ramos clears. This is turning into backs to the wall stuff.

Min 86 | It is all Sevilla now as Real Madrid look to just kill the pace of the game. The home side have their tails up.

Min 85 | GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Ramos heads it into his own net. He is known for his late goals and will not let that trademark go easily!

Min 84 | Marcelo now booked for a late tackle on Mariano.

Min 83 | Yet again, Sevilla foiled in a decent position in Real Madrid's penalty area. This Real Madrid side sure can defend. They have given their opponents nothing today.

Min 81 | Nasri is booked for a late tackle on Casemiro.

Min 80 | Ronaldo is through on goal but N'zonzi launches himself into a tackle and dispossesses the Real Madrid attacker.

Min 79 | N'Zonzi turns Casemiro upside down as Sevilla's frustration starts to show.

Sevilla substitution - Iborra comes off and is replaced by Sarabia.

75 minute update - It was a moment of, maybe not magic, but sheer pace by Dani Carvajal as he ducked behind Sevilla's defense and managed to be pulled down by Rico for a penalty. Ronaldo made no mistake. To Real Madrid's credit, the goal was coming as they had a number of decent chances prior to that. Sevilla have started attacking all over again but still can not open up Real Madrid and create meaningful chances.

Real Madrid substitution - Toni Kroos comes off and is replaced by Mateo Kovacic.

Min 74 | Iborra with a great chance as he centres to Ben Yedder but Iborra was offside in the build-up.

Min 70 | Sevilla straight back on the attack and Iborra gets a glancing header on a cross. It can't find the target or a teammate and goes out for a throw to Real Madrid.

Sevilla substitution - Jovetic comes on for Franco Vazquez

Min 67 | GOAL! Cristiano Ronaldo slots home and gives Real Madrid a lead that was coming.

Min 65 | Penalty Madrid! Rico is said to have tipped Carvajal as he went beyond him. Replays are simply inconclusive. It's all kicking off now too as Vitolo gets the ball thrown at him by Ronaldo and the Spanish attacker responds. Childish stuff.

Min 61 | A quick game of pinball results in Benzema skying one over the bar. He got an excellent strike on the ball and if he had of gotten it on target, you have to feel like it would have gone in.

60 minute update - The game is turning into somewhat of a basketball fixture with both sides taking turns to attack. Not as high-scoring, however, as a number of half chances have failed to be converted. Ronaldo, on the hour mark, probably had the best of them but tried to square for Benzema and they lost the ball. As it stands, one moment of magic - or luck - could decide this.

Min 60 | The ball bounces to Ronaldo who is through on goal but he looks to pass it to Benzema! Is this a new Ronaldo we have on our hands? He should have shot.

Min 59 | Sergio Ramos finds himself playing in the striker position after following the play on a counter-attack. He slips under pressure from Rami and the ball goes out for a throw.

Min 57 | High pressure on Real Madrid forces an awkward clearance by Navas. Much to the delight of the home crowd, Sevilla get the ball back high up the field.

Min 56 | Real Madrid's turn to attack and Ronaldo crosses. A mix-up by Rami and Escudero sees it land to the Portuguese striker and Rico saves. Close call for the home side.

Min 54 | A slick move involving a large chunk of Sevilla's players ends up at the feet of Ben Yedder. He fires low and away from Navas but the Costa Rican is equal to it and Marcelo clears the rebound.

Min 52 | Marcelo cuts inside with a neat step-over but he curls high and over.

Min 50 | Modric fouled, or so it looked, just outside the penalty area but the referee says no. It looked like a certain foul at the very least with a suspicion of it being inside.

Min 48 | Free-kick to Sevilla in a dangerous position. Nasri stands over it but it is headd away.

Min 47 | Franco 'El Mudo' Vazquez has a go early in the second half. Navas tips it over.

Min 46 | Yet again, unsurprisingly, the referee's whistle gets us underway!

Sevilla 0-0 Real Madrid: First half summary

A very tight affair, as many expected, with a number of quarter and half chances without anything ever materialising for either side. The game started with both sides eyeing up their opponent but it soon opened out and we were almost in full swing. Ronaldo might have had a claim for a penalty when he was impeded in the penalty area but the ref said no while Franco Vazquez tested Keylor Navas with a shot from outside the area. There is still more to come in this one and you feel a change on either side could change this. It might not be 5-4 but it will remain as tight and intense until the finish.

Sevilla 0-0 Real Madrid: First half

Min 45 | Rico comes for a cross and slices a fist off it. Carvajal gets the rebound but he can't get the ball to fall for him.

Min 43 | Mariano breaks and leaves a trail of Real Madrid players in his wake but a touch too many results in 'El Mudo' Vazquez fouling Casemiro in an effort to clear a patch for his teammate.

Min 40 | Benzema crosses a dangerous, bouncing cross into Sevilla's box but Ronaldo gets minimal contact and it goes wide.

Min 38 | Real Madrid with an attack and Benzema tries a smart flick inside but Sevilla are wise to it and manage to clear. It's the visitors who are in slight control now.

Min 37 | Vitolo dispossessed by Casemiro in the penalty area. Real Madrid retreating further and further back.

Min 36 | Kroos plays it wide to Carvajal but it has too much pace on it and makes it way out over the sideline. Could have been a dangerous situation Sevilla were left dealing with there.

Min 34 | Advantage played after a Real Madrid foul and Nasri breaks, plays a neat 1-2 with Vitolo and Nasri gets a shot away, which forces a save from the Costa Rican.

Min 21 | Good work by Mariano to find Vazquez but his shot is just slight too high to trouble Navas. Getting warmer though!

30 minute update - Possession keeps swinging like a pendulum with both sides enjoying spells before conceding to the opponent. Sevilla are enjoying more after 30 minutes with 57% but Real Madrid have probably looked more dangerous. They had a penalty claim and Ronaldo tested Rico but Sevilla on the other hand, Keylor Navas is yet to feel the wegight of the ball. Still wide opening, and continuing to open up as time ticks by.

Min 28 | Vazquez manages to get in behind but he did so by unlawful means and is ruled offside! He looks shocked but it looks to be the right decision.

Min 26 | Ronaldo breaks free but his shot is saved by Rico. He was quite far out, on the run and at a difficult angle and he still managed to make the goalie work - not bad.

Min 24 | A mistake by Varane almost gifts N'Zonzi a chance but they scramble away. The ball eventually finds itself bouncing in front of Nasri but his shot is too high. Leaning back too much, was the advice I used to get when I'd do the same as a chap!

Min 21 | Real Madrid have a very real shout for a penalty as Iborra runs into Ronaldo without ever making contact with the ball. The referee doesn't agree, however, and he waves play on. Game is really heating up now with Real Madrid dialling up the pressure.

Min 18 | A pass by Escudero much like that of a butcher butterflying a steak in that it split Real Madrid's defense in two, finds Iborra in behind but his shot is blocked for a corner. The ensuing corner is headed by the rangy N'Zonzi and over the bar.

Min 16 | A Real Madrid corner finds a Real Madrid head but it goes out for a Sevilla goalkick.

15 minute update - After much tension talked about in the build-up, the game has not lived up to expectations. Both teams appear to keen to keep the other out without ever pushing out the boat like we know they both can. It has threatened to open out on occasion but for now, we are left hoping that this one grows into the game we thought it would be all week.

Min 14 | A footrace between Mariano and Ronaldo see the former get a step on the latter but after a brief tussle, Ronaldo is asjudged to have fouled Sevilla's right-back. He protests but the referee is not for turning.

Min 13 | Sevilla increasing their intensity now and have had more of the ball around Real Madrid's final third in the last couple of minutes. No chances have come out of it but they are lurking, looking dangerous as ever.

Min 11 | Modric's turn to draw the ire of the ref as he pulls down Iborra. Free in the middle of the field as Sevilla build again.

Min 9 | Luka Modric makes an excellent burst into Sevilla's penalty area but under heavy pressure, he blazes a cross high and out of reach of Ronaldo.

Min 7 | Nasri clips Casemiro around the angles. Ronaldo winds up for the free in a favourable position but it batters itself against a Sevilla player in the wall. Deja Vu.

Min 6 | This game has started a far cagier affair than many thought. Both teams enjoying spells of possession without ever threatening.

Min 5 | Varane gets a notion and makes his way up the field but Escudero slides in well and dispossesses him. His ventures forward are just as fruitless.

Min 4 | Ramos gets his first chance with the ball at his feet and he seems to hold on a few seconds longer than he needs to just to soak up all the whistles coming his way.

Min 2 | Sevilla crowd are in full voice and their team holding possession well to start. Ramos has touched the ball once and the whistles were so loud they could only be heard by dogs.

Min 1 | Alejandro Hernandez gets us underway at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. There is no second leg to save yourself for after tonight and no need to break out your calculator to count up away goals as the winner takes all three points in the league. Vamos!

Sevilla - Real Madrid: Team news

Sevilla XI: Rico, Mariano, Nico Pareja, Rami, Escudero, Vitolo, NZonzi, Iborra, Franco Vázquez, Nasri and Ben Yedder.

Real Madrid XI: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Nacho, Ronaldo, Kroos, Benzema, Marcelo, Casemiro, Modric.

Sevilla - Real Madrid: Live buildup

20:34 | If Carvajal and Marcelo find themselves too far up the field, you can expect Vazquez and Vitolo to find themselves in behind and causing plenty of trouble to Nacho Varane and Ramos. This is going to be a fascinating tactical encounter and it's both surprising and nice to see Zidane changing his tact completely. His fluidity will be tested tonight.

20:32 | With just a few minutes to kickoff now, we have check the thermometer and it is a tasty 12 degrees in Seville. I wonder have they taken the heat coming from the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan into account though?

20:23 | Nasri was explaining his respect for Zidane in an interview recently and how he used to be compared to the great Frenchman. He also said he would love to work under Zidane because that would mean he would be playing for Real Madrid! Tonight is your audition, Samir.

20:17 | Want to see the atmosphere building at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan? Check this video out. Sure to be a pressure cooker at the stadium tonight given the teams' recent history (the last 12 days, that is).

20:13 | One of Sampaoli's brightest lights, Steven N'Zonzi, has been linked with a move away from the club but he is sure to take control of the Sevilla's midfield today after being rested midweek. Plenty of clubs reportedly interested and we are sure to see why tonight!

20:06 | No room for Sevilla's latest signing in Stevan Jovetic in Jorge Sampaoli's side but he is on the bench and could come off the bench and score like he did the last day out. No room for Clement Lengley either, who had an excellent debut for his new club mid-week. He too is on the bench though, should he be needed.

20:00 | Add the atmosphere to that and you are looking at one under pressure Real Madrid side. They have coped in the past though so I guess we will just have to wait and see.

19:57 | You would have to presume that Zidane has practised this with his side plenty in the past or this could be a kamikaze mission. If Sampaoli even got a sniff that Real Madrid were trying out a new system, he will surely send his team out to confuse their opponents.

19:55 | As we were trying to speculate earlier, it turns out that Zidane will go with three at the back and it's anyone's guess after that. Possibly five in and around midfield including Marcelo and Carvajal as wing backs and then Ronaldo and Benzema up front putting on a two-man show.

19:52 | If you are wondering how and where you can watch the game, look no further than this article where we reveal everthing you need to know. But stay with us here because I'm all fired up for this one!

19:49 | Zinedine Zidane looking for another game without loss to go with the 40 that preceded it. He is also closing in on some quite good teams that went on unbeaten runs. This is how his 40 game unbeaten run looks - WWWWWWDWWWWDWWW WWWDDDDWWWWWDWWWWWDDWWWWWD

19:39 | Zidane welcomes Ronaldo back to the fold after missing the last Sevilla clash. It is also interesting to see where he deploys Nacho. He seems to have his back four in Carvajal, Ramos, Varane and Marcelo. Nacho might be left midfield, or alternatively, it is Marcelo who will oprtate from that position.

On that note, Sampaoli welcomes back Mariano, Pareja, Vitolo, N´Zonzi and Franco Vazquez as he almost completely changes his team. This is going to be a proper barn-burner as many of those players were rested from the Copa game.

19:34 | Sevilla dominated much of the play last week but Real Madrid had a weakened team and were 3-0 up from the first leg. Plenty of speculation as to how Zidane will set up this time.

19:03 | The biggest beating Sevilla have taken at the hands of Real Madrid at their home stadium was 2-6 in both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. Sevilla beat Real Madrid 4-0 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in the 03-04 season with a goal by Dani Alves thrown in for good measure.

18:29 | Sergio Ramos and his Real Madrid teammates were hailed as they arrived in Seville on Sunday morning. The welcome might not be as warm tonight at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan but los Blancos' fans were there for the team earlier.

17:52 | Paul Pogba has been speaking of his summer of indecision, and ultimately decision, again as he told SFR Sport that, "I could have gone to Real Madrid or to Barcelona, who were interested. But I chose Manchester United."

16:45 | One reason for Sevilla fans to be very, very fearful tonight. Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema are back in the side, and they have a frightening goal record against the Andalusians.

15:50 | After the game we witnessed on Thursday the prospect of seeing Sevilla and Madrid face off again is mouthwatering. That said, it’s unlikely that such a great game will be repeated -- at least that is what our editor Alfredo Relaño thinks.

14:55 | A reminder that Isco and James have been ruled out for Real Madrid tonight, as both continue to struggle with knocks.

14:15 | The Sánchez Pizjuán and its fans will once again go under the spotlight as Sevilla host Real Madrid tonight. Following insults thrown at Sergio Ramos on Thursday, Sevilla have urged their supporters to put an end to abuse from the stands with a possible LaLiga sanction hanging over the club.

12:55 | Sevilla's dominance in the Cup on Thursday is not likely to be repeated in La Liga tonight, reckons AS journalist PP San Martin in his opinion piece.  Zidane will not be as conservative, he says, and a more ambitious-looking Madrid will worry Sampaoli.

12:20 | How about a bit of vintage Sevilla v Madrid action to get you warm for this evening's action? Check out this absolute piledriver from Zidane at the Sanchez Pizjuan back in 2005. Bosh!

11:10 | Good morning! Stay right where you are for all the latest team news and live buildup ahead of tonight's match at the Sanchez Pizjuan, which'll be the third time Sevilla and Real have met in less than two weeks. They must be getting sick of the sight of each other now, surely?

Sevilla - Real Madrid: Match preview

Tonight’s game between Sevilla and Real Madrid doesn’t get much bigger. Following on from the spectacular 3-3 draw between the two sides in the Copa del Rey, which saw Zidane’s side eliminate Sampaoli’s men to progress to the quarter-finals, only three days have passed, barely time to digest and regroup for this crunch game in LaLiga. The match sees third (Sevilla, on 36 points) play first (Real Madrid, on 40). In fact 40 is Madrid’s number at the moment: the number of games without tasting defeat. Sevilla will undoubtedly be out to derail that record and seek revenge for their cup exit.

Sevilla

Despite crashing out of the Copa del Rey, Sampaoli’s side are on an incredible ascent: the knockout stages of the Champions League and second in the league, should they beat Madrid of course. In Thursday’s game, Sevilla went 3-1 up and will be disappointed they let their lead slip. Now, with the cup disappointment behind them, LaLiga shifts into focus.

Sampaoli has done a fine job this season, but a large portion of the praise has to fall on Monchi’s doorstep. This year’s signings have hit the ground sprinting, for instance Nasri and Ben Yedder, while their most recent acquisition, Jovetic scored against Los Blancos, ten minutes after making his debut. Carrico and Carlos Fernández have joined the rest of the squad and are due to return in the not-too-distant future, while Tremoulinas and Khron-Dehli are also back training and could be included in the squad.

One to watch: Vitolo. Spain international is one of the key cogs in the smooth operation and attacking dimension of this Sevilla side.

Real Madrid

It’s all smiles in the Madrid camp, particularly given Zidane’s unrivalled run of 40 games without tasting defeat, a record in Spanish football. In their last game, against today’s rivals Sevilla, to say they left it late would be the understatement of Matchday 18. Moreover, the Andalusian side have shown that they can make life extremely difficult for the league leaders, particularly with the result likely to have a huge impact on the title race.

Despite recovering players in key areas - Sergio Ramos made his return in midweek, scoring with a penalty and becoming embroiled in a spat with the Sevilla fans - Isco and Pepe are doubts, while Gareth Bale remains sidelined. In their last seven games Real have won five and drawn two (against Barcelona and Las Palmas), and Zidane’s men will be looking to make it six wins in eight to pull away even further from the chasing pack.

One to watch: Cristiano Ronaldo. After being rested in both legs of Madrid’s Cope del Rey tie against Sevilla, the Portuguese striker will once again face one of his favourite rivals – his goal tally against the Andalusians is currently a whopping 22.

Sevilla - Real Madrid: Possible lineups

Predicted Sevilla XI: Sergio Rico, Mercado, Pareja, Rami, Mariano, Franco Vázquez, N'Zonzi, Vitolo, Escudero, Nasri, Ben Yedder

Predicted Madrid XI: Keylor Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, Casemiro, Kroos, Lucas Vázquez, Benzema, Cristiano
