First home cup defeat in four years
Real Madrid’s defeat to Celta Vigo on Wednesday was their first loss at the Bernabéu in the Copa del Rey for almost four years. The last one came in the 2013 cup final, when Los Blancos were on the end of a 2-1 home reverse to Atletico.
Casemiro: “Losing in Seville damaged us”
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro admitted after the game that the “defeat is concerning because Madrid can never lose.” "Losing in Seville has damaged us," he continued. “We didn’t play well. We had a good first half but we didn’t score. We’re still in it, there’s still the 2nd leg.”
Ramos: “It was a complicated game”
Madrid captain Sergio Ramos said the team’s failure to push for an equaliser in the closing moments was uncharacteristic. “It was a complicated game,” he said. “Madrid always put the pressure on and get into the box during the final minutes, but this time we didn’t”.
Win “no surprise” to Celta boss Berizzo
"It is a bit arrogant to say we are favourites against Real Madrid, but we will enjoy a win like this," said Celta Vigo manager Eduardo Berizzo in the post-match press conference. "None of my team's victories surprise me. It is a huge win, coming to a place like this and facing the best team in the world, but we believed we could do it.
Maradona at the Bernabéu
