Black ice danger in Monte Carlo
It was the opening stage of the Monte Carlo rally event and as New Zealand driver, Hayden Paddon, tried to take a left-hand turn he lost control on black ice. The car, a Hyundai i20, rolled over after hitting the mountain where a spectator was taking photos.
The 50-year old Spanish spectator, was taken by helicopter to a hospital in the French city of Nice and later pronounced dead.
Withdrawal from the race
Following the tragic news, Paddon pulled out of the competition. Both he and co-driver, John Kennard, were unhurt physically in the crash.
