After 10 seasons at Real Madrid, the future of Portuguese centre-back Pepe is uncertain. The 35-year old’s contract is up in the summer and reports are linking him with a move to the Chinese Super League when his current deal runs out.
Amid this speculation, Pepe made a mysterious reference to the first President of the United Sates of America, George Washington, on Thursday with a rather cryptic Instagram post.
"My conscience has more weight than the opinion of people"
"Preserving the fulfilment of duty while maintaining silence is the best response to the words of others," Pepe wrote.
"My conscience has more weight than the opinion of people. It has always been that way, and will continue to be #KeepStrong."
The post appears to paraphrase George Washington's farewell address made in 1796. Whether Pepe was hinting at his own goodbye in the near future or not is open to interpretation.
