Follow the coverage match: Valencia vs. Real Madrid
Manchester United's chief summer target is Atlético Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann - but the Red Devils are also reportedly eyeing a swoop for Toni Kroos.
According to The Independent, the Premier League club are out to bolster their midfield by signing the Real Madrid star ahead of the 2017/18 season.
United almost signed Kroos in 2014
A move for Kroos would see the 20-time English champions reignite their interest in a player they were apparently close to taking to Old Trafford three years ago.
In December, ex-United manager David Moyes revealed that a deal was in place for the German international to join the club from Bayern Munich in summer 2014, only for the Scot's sacking that April to scupper the transfer.
Neither Real Madrid nor Kroos likely to be keen
It's thought that Real Madrid would be highly unlikely to countenance selling Kroos, who is a key figure in Zinedine Zidane's team and was handed a new, six-year contract at the Spanish capital outfit in October.
Furthermore, United boss José Mourinho would be expected to have a tough task persuading the 27-year-old to leave the Santiago Bernabéu, where his prospects of challenging for major honours are presently considerably greater.
Champions League winners last season, Los Merengues remain in contention to retain their European title this term and also lead the way in LaLiga.
United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table - two points behind Arsenal in the final Champions League spot - and face a battle to qualify for next year's edition of the continent's elite club competition.
