It was a game that Real Madrid needed to win to return to their seat on top of LaLiga table. It was a first hour that made most people watching believe that it wasn't going to happen. But a final flurrish from Zidane's men turned 2-0 in favour of hosts Villarreal to a 2-3 victory and three points for Los Blancos.
Split views on the penalty
But it was the second goal of those three that caused real controversy. Cristiano Ronaldo will be rightly credited with the goal, after a clean strike from the spot, but the question was around whether the penalty should have been awarded in the first place.
The ball had been hit firmly from outside the area by Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos and as the shot was blocked it deflected upwards and struck the arm of Bruno Soriano. Replays suggest he was trying to get his hand out of the way rather than deliberately trying to affect its course - something quite key in the laws of the game.
The midfielder spoke after the match, clearly dejected:
""You will see clearly on TV that I can't do anything. I said to the referee that I couldn't cut off my arm. It's clear that it wasn't a penalty. The ref told me that is was [a] clear [penalty]".
