André Bergdölmo used to ply his trade at Strömsgodset, the Norwegian club at which Martin Odegaard burst on to the scene. Today, the 45 year old is a coach at Ullensaker Kisa, of the Norwegian second tier.
Odegaard the main man
Bergdölmo discussed Odegaard’s career thus far, at Strömsgodset and Real Madrid, in the Dutch media. He concluded that the youngster has not learnt enough during his time at those two clubs:
“When he was at Strömsgodset, Odegaard was the focal point of the team, nine players worked for him.”
Real Madrid training methods
He believes that Odegaard has grown as a footballer at Real Madrid, but that the style of training has not been appropriate. “In Real Madrid Castilla, he improved, but at Hereenveen he has learnt what it really means to be a professional. It’s possible that at Real Madrid he did a lot of weight training.”
Media storm has calmed
Bergdölmo added that there was initially a media storm around Odegaard’s arrival at Hereenveen, but that the press soon lost interest: “Perhaps it is better, because they put a lot of pressure on him.” He emphasised that even though he has been in the Netherlands short while, he has made big strides there: “Hereenveen is the only club where he has really learnt something.”
So far this season, Odegaard has played ten matches in the Netherlands, one of which was in the Cup. He has not yet opened his account of Hereenveen, but has provided two assists.
