'Baby boom' in Iceland nine months after England triumph

Los jugadores de Islandia celebran junto a sus novias la victoria sobre Inglaterra.

Last weekend, Iceland registered a record number of births, nine months after the national team knocked England out of Euro 2016 on the 27th June.

The success of the Icelandic national team at the 2016 European Championships is bearing fruit. Nine months on from Iceland’s victory over England, which saw them proceed to the quarter finals, the country is experiencing a ‘baby boom’.

Doctor sees records set

Icelandic website ‘Visir’ picked up on comments by a local doctor, who stated that last weekend saw the record number of epidural procedures administered to patients.

The city of Barcelona experienced a similar phenomenon in February 2010, nine months after Iniesta’s sumptuous strike sent Barça through to the 2009 Champions League final. Some hospitals in the city registered an increase in up to 50% of births.

Iceland going strong in Russia qualification

Before the match against England, drew with Portugal and Hungary (1-1 on both occasions), and defeated Austria 2-1 in Paris. At the moment, Iceland are in second place in their qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, three points behind leaders Croatia.
