That continual question persists… will we see Fernando Alonso behind the wheel of a Mercedes?

Doubts over Bottas' adaptation

The sudden retirement of Nico Rosberg opened the possibility, and now, given the disaster at McLaren Honda and doubts surrounding Valtteri Bottas, speculation has intensified.

After winning the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, Lewis Hamilton was asked whether Alonso could be his teammate next season. Hamilton was unequivocal in his reply.

Hamilton quashes rumours

“It’s not going to happen,” said the British racer. “Valtteri is fantastic here at the team. He was very, very fast at the last race. He has obviously got a lot of potential and a lot of growth to go, but it is all about finding the right balance in the team. So far Valtteri and I have a great balance and the scales weigh up nicely.

“If you have got two kilos on either side, and then take the two kilos off and put four on, what is the point? You need the balance.”

Alonso opened up recently in a revealing interview with AS. The Spaniard was frustrated at the performance levels of his McLaren.
