Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale lasted just over half an hour of Sunday’s Clásico in the Bernabéu. The Welshman did not look entirely recovered from an ankle injury and went off after picking up yet another injury to his calf, asking for the change to be made when it became apparent he could not continue.

Bale's injury woes

Bale’s injury was the 17th separate problem he has picked up during his Madrid career and the eighth suffered in his calves (six on the left and two on the right). The latest setback may have been caused by the Real forward not feeling confident to place his full weight on his troublesome ankle, on which he underwent surgery in November and spent three months recovering.

Real's doctors advised against Bale playing

Zidane said last week that he could not guarantee Bale’s presence in the Clásico but the Welshman was determined to play. Bale picked up an ankle injury against Bayern Munich in the Champions League and missed games against Sporting and the return against the Bundesliga side. He pushed himself in training to be fit for the Clásico, apparently against the advice of Madrid’s club doctors, but Zidane included him in the squad.
