Jesús Vallejo has returned to Real Madrid as he works to recover from an injury sustained while on loan at Frankfurt and will join Zinedine Zidane’s first team squad ahead of the 2017-18 season.

Vallejo arrived in the Spanish capital on Sunday afternoon and was a spectator during the Clásico. The central defender picked up an injury in training with the Bundesliga club last week that will rule him out for around six weeks and Madrid decided to bring him back early from his loan to continue his rehabilitation at the club’s training facilities.

Pepe replacement

Vallejo is expected to fill Pepe’s place in the squad with the Portuguese defender likely to leave at the end of the season when his contract expires. During his loan at Frankfurt the Spain under-21 international made 25 appearances and earned plenty of plaudits for his performances, convincing Zidane to include him in his plans for next season.

Spain under-21 goal

In the meantime Vallejo will aim to recover in time to represent Spain at this summer’s European under-21 Championship in Poland.
