Real Madrid: a year of goals

Real Madrid: a year of goals

Today is the first anniversary of the last game in which Madrid failed to score. In that time they have played 56 games and scored 151 goals.
Atlético vs Real Madrid

The 26th April 2016. Not a special date for most people but it was the day when Real Madrid played Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals in England. The game finished 0-0 in what was the final season at City for manager Manuel Pellegrini and who could have guessed then that a full calendar year later no opposing team would have been able to keep a clean sheet against the Real Madrid goal machine. And on the anniversary of that failure to score Real Madrid kept their run going, with Morata scoring in under a minute against Deportivo La Coruña.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema and, of course, Ramos

56 games and 28 opponents. Real Madrid's 151 goals have been shared around the squad with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Ramos and many of the rest getting involved. In that time, across all competitions, it was little old Cultural Leonesa who took the most punishment, seeing 13 scored passed them in the Copa del Rey tie. Sevilla - for much of the year looking like a potential title rival - had the ball cross their hallowed goal line 10 times in four matches, and their city neighbours Real Betis, as well as Legia Warsaw and Osasuna, picked the ball out of the net eight times.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid's number 1

Top scorer for Los Blancos in this streak has been, unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese player has notched up 35 goals, almost a quarter of the total. Benzema has contributed 18 goals to the cause and Morata 17. Central defender Sergio Ramos is the fourth top scorer in the team over the last 12 months with 11, and that total includes that goal in the Champions League final that clinched the historic Undécima for the club. Gareth Bale, through his injury hit season, has managed to add 10 goals to the team's collection with bit-part players Isco and Marco Asensio both getting nine. We should also not forget the four times that an opposition player scored into his own net. They all count.

Consistency the key for Real Madrid

But the key to this scoring run is not the accumulative total, other teams have scored more, but the consistency of at least one goal in every game. The Spanish record for doing this is long gone and Bayern Munich's 61-game scoring feat is not far away.
