Barcelona's Gerard Piqué was given a frosty reception by fellow spectators as he took in the tennis at the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday.

Defender Piqué was at the Spanish capital's Caja Mágica sports venue to see friend and compatriot David Ferrer beat Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin.

When his image flashed up on the arena's video scoreboards, the 30-year-old found himself on the end of boos, insults and pro-Real Madrid chants.

Watching the game from a box alongside four other people, Piqué did not display any outward emotion at the jeers being directed at him.

The player has become a deeply unpopular figure among supporters of Real, having often courted controversy with outbursts against Barcelona's arch rivals.

Most recently, Piqué took a swipe at Los Blancos after Spain's friendly with France in March, telling reporters: "I don't like the values Real transmit".
