Real Betis confirmed the departure of manager Víctor Sánchez on Tuesday.

Alexis Trujillo, who was a member of Sánchez’ coaching staff, will replace him. Marcos Álvarez will support Trujillo, and the pair will take charge of the match against Atlético Madrid this weekend, as well as the final La Liga match against Sporting.

Sánchez little better than Poyet

Victor Sánchez lasted in the job for 25 league matches, and a further two in the Copa del Rey, where his side was eliminated by Deportivo. He replaced Gustavo Poyet after the Uruguayan coach had accumulated 11 points in his first 11 matches. With 26 points in his 25 matches in charge, Victor Sánchez has barely constituted an improvement.

His dismissal will cost Betis €500,000.

Betis plagued by instability

This is the latest chapter in a period of instability in Seville. In the last three seasons, Betis have replaced their coach almost every four-and-a-half months. This is the ninth change since Pep Mel left the club in December 2013. Mel also left behind the only period of stability that Betis have enjoyed in recent years, and Betis also qualified for the Europa League under his stewardship.

Betis have won just five matches in 2017, and conceded eight goals in their last two matches, against Alavés and Leganés.
