Sandro departure looks likely as contract talks stall

Sandro

Mariano Pozo / Diario AS

Málaga are offering to double the player's wage, but also want to increase his release clause. Everton and Atlético Madrid are keen on the former-Barça striker.

Málaga’s hope of retaining the services of Sandro has taken a hit in the last few days.

Even though the player has not taken a final decision, and has not ruled out the possibility of staying at La Rosaleda, there is an air of pessimism at the club. What seems clear is that if Sandro is to stay, Málaga will need to alter the conditions of the offer they have made him.

Málaga offer to double Sandro's wages

The blue-and-whites made an offer to double Sandro’s wages, but the same offer also stipulated that his release clause would increase significantly. The release clause has created difficulties between the two parties, and is the major obstacle to a new contract lies.

It is inevitable that at some point, Sandro will take the leap to a bigger team. When that opportunity arises, he wants to avoid scaring potential suitors with a high price tag.

Everton one of many to show interest

While Sandro and Málaga continue to negotiate, the former-Barcelona striker continues to pique the interest of numerous clubs. In Spain, Villarreal, Sevilla, and Atlético are all alert to his availability.

From further afield, Everton have shown strong interest. The club’s Dutch manager, Ronald Koeman, travelled to Southern Spain to personally scout the player in the recent match against Celta. Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton, and Rafa Benítez’ newly-promoted Newcastle are also keen to acquire his services.

Málaga have not thrown in the towel quite yet, but the club and Sandro remain a long way apart in negotiations on the release clause.
