Athletic Club have announced that defender Yeray Álvarez is to leave the Spain Under-21 squad and have further cancer treatment.

Athletic Club's Yeray Álvarez is to undergo chemotherapy after tests revealed that his testicular cancer has returned, the LaLiga club confirmed on Tuesday.

Álvarez, 22, was originally diagnosed with cancer in December 2016, before having surgery to remove a tumour and returning to Athletic action in February.

Yeray treatment to last around three months

In a statement released on its official website, the club said: "In the radiological control an abnormality (adenopathy) has been detected that must be treated.

"In the next days the player will begin a complementary treatment (chemotherapy) indicated by the specialists," the Bilbao outfit continued. "The estimated period of medical leave will be approximately three months."

The defender, who had been on Spain Under-21 duty as Albert Celades' team prepare for the 2017 European Championship in Poland, will now leave the squad.

Álvarez: "This is a fight I'm going to win"

Following the news, Álvarez said on his Instagram profile: "When it seems like you've toppled it, it gets back up again, but don't worry, this is a fight I'm going to win with all the people who support me, and if I have to topple it again I'll do so, and I'll get back up a thousand and one times."
