Marco Asensio deserves hearty congratulation, and not just for his exceptional hat-trick in Spain’s 5-0 thrashing of Macedonia; La Rojita’s opening game of the Under 21 European Championship. Asensio’s display in Gdynia capped off a fine season, in which the Mallorquín made quite an impact at Real Madrid.
Asensio a debut-master for Madrid
Few footballers are able to trumpet that they have scored in each of their debuts, yet Asensio can. The former-Mallorca midfielder scored for Los Blancos in his UEFA Super Cup bow, in his Champions League debut, his LaLiga debut, and also his first match in the Copa del Rey.
On Saturday, he extended that impressive streak to include the Under 21 European Championships. Asensio’s next debut will be in the Spanish Super Cup, against Barcelona on 12 August.
Super Cup came first, then LaLiga
Asensio made his Real Madrid debut in the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla on 9 August 2016. He opened the scoring after 21 minutes in Trondheim, as Madrid went on to win 3-2 after extra time. He made his LaLiga debut later that month, against Real Sociedad in Anoeta, and scored the third goal for Zinedine Zidane’s team.
The Champions League was up next, but Asensio had to wait until the third group-stage match to make his bow. Against Legia Warsaw, he found the net in a 5-1 victory.
On 26 October, Asensio was in the starting line-up as Real Madrid pummeled Cultural Leonesa 1-7 in the Copa del Rey. It was Asensio’s debut in Spain’s domestic cup competition, and he scored a brace.
