Rafa Márquez sanctioned by US Treasury for links to drug trafficking

The current Mexico and Atlas captain is one of 22 people sanctioned by the Treasury for alleged ties to drug trafficker Raúl Flores Hernández.

Ex-Barcelona defender Rafael Márquez was one of 22 Mexicans sanctioned by the United States Treasury on Wednesday for ties to the drug trafficker Raúl Flores Hernández. The Treasury also stated that it will sanction 43 companies.

Márquez accused of laundering illegal money

The singer Julión Álvarez is also one of the 22 individuals. In an official statement from the US Treasury, Álvarez and 38-year-old Márquez are accused of having "longstanding relationships with Flores Hernandez... acted as front persons for him and his DTO [drug-trafficking organisation] and held assets on their behalf".

Visa revoked and assets frozen

In the short term, those individuals identified by the US Treasury will have their visas cancelled, while their assets in the US will be frozen. Additionally, companies in the US will be prohibited from engaging in business activities with them.

Márquez, who is the captain of the Mexican national team, currently represents Atlas in his home country.
