Zinedine Zidane has confirmed through Real Madrid’s official media channels that Cristiano Ronaldo will play 90 minutes in the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy clash against Fiorentina. The match will take place at the Bernabéu on Wednesday.
Ronaldo currently serving five-match ban
Ronaldo is currently serving a five-match ban after he reacted to a red card in the Spanish Super Cup by shoving the referee. On Tuesday, The Spanish Disciplinary Committee for Sports rejected Real Madrid’s appeal against the punishment.
Given that Madrid’s number 7 did not take part in pre-season, Zidane is keen to use the Trophy as a means for Ronaldo to boost his match fitness.
Zidane: 'We want the Bernabéu Trophy to stay at home'
The Santiago Bernabéu Trophy: “It’s an important match for the fans. This year it falls after the first round of LaLiga fixtures, and we’ll try to do well, and above all, try to give the players minutes. We want the trophy to stay at home, and we’ll try to play a good game.”
Cristiano Ronaldo: “We’re well physically, and there are players like Cristiano Ronaldo, who will play the full 90 minutes.”
The Madrid fans: “We call upon everyone who wants to watch the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy with us. We’re going to try to do everything possible so that the trophy remains at home.”
'A very good start to the season'
The start of the season: “We hope to continue like this. It’s a very good start to the season, but we know that it’s long. We have just started the league, there are 38 matches and the strength will be tremendous. We’re happy with what we’re doing. We want to continue in the same vein, above all, in the way we’re playing. If we can keep playing like this we will be happy.”
