Cristiano will not feature at the Anoeta on Sunday night against Real Sociedad as he serves the last of his five-game suspension for pushing a referee in the Spanish Super Cup. the Portuguese has scored in 29 of 34 grounds he has played in but has never hit the back of the net at Anoeta, the new San Mames (Athletic Bilbao), Gran Canaria stadium (Las Palmas), Nuevo Arcángel (Cordoba), Nueva Condomina (Murcia). Of the 20 grounds in LaLiga this season, Ronaldo has not scored in two - Butarque (Leganés) and Montilivi (Girona) - but only because he has not played in them.
His poor streak in and around Anoeta has become somewhat of a bad omen. In the first two seasons that Ronaldo and Real Madrid visited the ground in 2010-11 and 2011-12, he failed to score but since then due to injuries, suspensions and rotations, the Portuguese has not even played. That's six seasons since he last walked out on the turf at Anoeta.
Moreover, Real Madrid's visits to San Sebastian have been a little bipolar at times too. In the last five games, they have won three, lost one and drew one in quite high-scoring games. Real Sociedad's high-scoring start to the season - 14 in four games - could mean a further hex on Real Madrid on Sunday.
