Former Germany international and Bayern Munich stalwart defender Markus Babbel has come out in defence of deposed coach Carlo Ancelotti and launched a scathing attack on the squad, reserving particular opprobrium for Franck Ribéry while also suggesting that player power may have been behind the Italian’s dismissal.
"Ribéry is not what he once was"
“I’m angry that all of the responsibility has fallen an Carlo Ancelotti,” Babbel said. “Ribéry has made a great contribution to the club and he was a fantastic player in the past but now he is not what he once was. He hasn’t scored in the Champions League in the last two seasons but he thinks that he’s at the same level as Messi or Ronaldo.”
“Some players at Bayern are living on past glories. We have been world champions, we have won the Champions League, but that is not the situation at the club now. I would be very surprised if Ancelotti had not identified the problem and tried to correct it,” Babbel concluded.
