Georges Griffiths was killed be car-jackers in Abidjan, the economic capital of the Ivory Coast, after refusing to hand over his vehicle.

Footballer Georges Griffiths has died in his native Ivory Coast after being shot by car-jackers in the African country's economic capital, Abidjan, on Thursday.

Griffiths gunned down in Abidjan's Cocody district

Griffiths, who had been without a club since leaving Hungarian side Diosgyor in July this year, was killed in the city's Cocody district after being held up by two armed robbers and refusing to hand over his Mercedes.

The 27-year-old was rushed to hospital, where doctors were unable to save him.

Griffiths spent much of his career in Czech Republic, Hungary

The striker, once tipped as the successor to legendary Ivory Coast centre-forward Didier Drogba, began his career at Ivorian clubs AS Indiené and Sirocco, before moving to Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic in 2012. He then signed for Lombard Pápa in Hungary in 2013, and joined Diosgyor the following year.

Also an Ivory Coast Under-23 international

He scored 21 goals in 79 appearances in European football, and also won three caps for Ivory Coast Under-23s, netting once.
