Ramos' national holiday surprise: "I was out walking the dog..."

On the day when Spain celebrates its nationhood, La Fiesta Nacional de España, Real Madrid's captain stumbled across an enormous Spain flag draped from a block of flats.

Today is 12th October, the day when Spain celebrates its nationhood - La Fiesta Nacional de España formerly known as El Día de la Hispanidad commemorates the anniversary of Christopher Colombus' discovery of the Americas on this day in 1492. It's a national holiday in Spain and although the Real Madrid squad did train this morning, the players had the rest of the day off.

Like Colombus, Madrid captain Sergio Ramos made a discovery of his own - whilst he was out and about on Spain's national day, he stumbled across an enormous red and yellow flag of Spain draped from the top of a block of flats in the capital. Ramos thought he'd better capture the moment for posterity and share it by posting a video. "I was just out walking the dog, going for an afternoon stroll, and look what we found... on such a special day for my country. I'm very proud of our flag. Cheers!"

Measuring 731 square metres, it's the largest Spain flag in existence - it's twice the size of the Square named after Colombus, la Plaza de Colón in central Madrid. The flag was unfurled yesterday in Valdebebas where it will remain for the next seven days before being taken down. The construction company who came up with the idea explained: "The flag is so big because in Spain, there is room for all of us".
