The loss against Spartak was Sevilla's heaviest in continental competition since a Real Madrid side with Di Stefano, Gento and Kopa knocked eight past them.

Sevilla’s 5-1 Champions League defeat against Spartak Moscow will be long remembered by both clubs. The Moscow side intends to put the match ball in their club museum to celebrate a historic victory but the Liga club will prefer to forget the experience as quickly as possible.

Real Madrid dished out historic thrashing in 1958

Sevilla’s players can at least comfort themselves with the fact that humbling as the loss was it will not go down in the record books as the club’s worst performance in Europe. That came on January 23, 1958, in the Spanish capital as a Real Madrid team featuring Alfredo Di Stéfano, Paco Gento and Raymond Kopa hammered the Andalusians 8-0 in Chamartín. Di Stéfano helped himself to four with Kopa bagging two. Gento one and Ramón Marsal finding the net a minute before being sent off along with Sevilla captain Marcelino Del Río at the start of the second half.

Over the course of Sevilla’s 173 European games to date they have only been beaten by four goals or more three times: on Tuesday in Moscow, by Madrid in the 1950s and also by Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern, who hit four without reply in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup in December 1982. Sevilla had taken a 1-0 lead to the Betzenbergstadion but were roundly beaten by the German side in the return fixture with Kaiserslautern rattling in three in the opening half.
