Three years have passed since the tragic death of the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper.

Three years have passed since Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was murdered.

The 27-year-old goalie was gunned down in an alleged robbery at the home of his girlfriend, the singer and actress Kelly Khumalo.

With still no arrests, football fans around South Africa are demanding for justice to be served.

Despite a R250,000 reward for any information, police investigations have been unsuccessful.

SAFA waiting for answers

South African Football Association (SAFA) CEO Dennis Mumble told SowetanLive that police have not kept them in the loop.

"Clearly this (the police silence) does not do justice to the family‚ first and foremost‚ that we are nowhere near finding out who it is that murdered Senzo Meyiwa‚" Mumble said.

"So, we really have to encourage the authorities to do a lot better than what is happening right now and perhaps appeal to them to put extra resources (into the investigation).

"But also for the public‚ if there is anybody out there with information to come forth to assist the police in the investigation.

"It’s a tragedy that we still do not have any answers or anywhere near close to knowing what exactly happened on that night."

More questions than answers

Three years after the tragic event, the case seems to be no closer to being solved.

Earlier this year, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula promised that the case would be cracked soon.

"It is one of my priorities to crack this case with the team. I’m very positive we’ll make arrests, but I don’t want to tip them [the killers] off by divulging the plans we are going to use."

Several Twitter users questioned how is it possible that there were four witnesses but yet no one knows who shot committed the crime.

Despite demands for answers, the Police Ministry spokesperson Vuyo Maga says he cannot reveal much information related to the investigations.

"No, we can’t. Remember each and every investigation the police, ever since the case started, have followed every different lead. So, we’re waiting for the leads."

Brilliant captain and goalkeeper

Born on September 24 1987, Meyiwa was goalkeeper and captain for Orlando Pirates.

He joined the Johannesburg side in 2002, making a total of 109 appearances for the first team.

Meyiwa made his international debut for South Africa in a 2-0 victory against Lesotho on 2 June 2013.

The goalie represented his country in 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification, with his last match being a 0-0 draw against Congo on October 2014, a month after being appointed Bafana Bafana captain.

His final match was the day before his murder, a 4-1 victory for Orlando Pirates over Ajax Cape Town.

He was buried in his hometown, Durban, and his funeral was attended by thousands of people. That day, South African President Jacob Zuma ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast.
