Sergi Roberto and Barcelona have been in contact for the last few days with a view to extending the 25-year-old’s contract.
Sergi Roberto and Barcelona keen to reconcile
The La Masia graduate’s current deal expires in 2019 and his buy-out clause is €40 million. Roberto has come to be considered an indispensable member of the squad by the coaching staff at Camp Nou. As such, he hopes that upcoming meetings will lead to an agreement that is beneficial for both parties.
At the moment, a difference of opinion in respect of the player’s fixed income is preventing the closure of a deal. Roberto sees the fixed salary as key, while the club insist on basing the terms of the contract on variables. Nevertheless, both parties are eager to reach an agreement before the matter becomes a soap opera.
Assumed an important role under Luis Enrique
Sergi Roberto’s life has changed a great deal in a short space of time. When he appeared to be surplus to requirements a couple of seasons ago, he adapted to the circumstances and performed to a high level under the tutelage of Luis Enrique. What is more, he was the protagonist in key matches last season, most memorably in Barça’s historic comeback against PSG in the Champions League, in which Roberto scored the final, decisive goal in the 6-1 victory.
The versatile operator knows that he must stay relaxed during the negotiation process. His exceptional performances provide a guarantee, although he is aware that his wage will remain in the third bracket within the squad.
